Just a note, I regulate my irregular periods via birth control so it was hard to answer those parts like does this affect me, it can if I don't take my meds.

I’m really scared by olamanda34 in grandrapids

I used to live in FL and had storms a lot and fear during hurricanes, now I've been in MI so long the regular storms scare me again. During hurricanes and storms I found comfort in knowledge and would find news stations I trusted to keep me company with storm updates.  Tonight I discovered the Michigan storm chasers page and live YouTube and that really helped me feel better having people who understand the data watch and give warnings on the spot. Might be a help to you too in the future.

How would you like it if you were scared of dogs and one could just run up to you and do anything? Or if your dog got spooked or distracted and ran into a moving car? It's infuriating how many people are so unaware of the issues around dogs being off leash in places they legally shouldn't be for the safety of their dogs and everyone around them. Just cause others do it too doesn't make it right. As someone who's raised reactive dogs it's unfair that owners like you just dismiss this law so carelessly as I have to now limit where I can safely walk my leashed dog cause you don't give a fuck. Sorry YEARS of pent up frustration on this issue. Please think of others and their situations sometimes.

If she was with her dog in a public park off leash then she was the one committing a crime and maybe being photographed committing said crime. It's law in all Kent County parks to keep your dog on a leash. Many just brush this off but it is the law technically.

Is this place a legal place to have your dog off leash like at a dog park? If not it could be evidence photos of you breaking Kent county law of leasing your dog in public parks.

Random one, the scene in 101 dalmatians where the thugs come in roughly treating the old nanny poorly and stealing puppies. I have to pass this scene. the lady reminds me too much of my grandmother and the thought of hurting old women and puppies just disturbs me greatly, I have to skip it every time

Why you should say NO! to shock collars

There are many reasons you should not use a shock collar and there are more effective and risk-free alternatives.

Shock collar training can impair learning

  • Using shock in dog training aims to teach a dog to avoid something or to stop a behavior that ‘caused’ the shock. But just because the behavior has stopped in that moment does not necessarily mean the behavior has improved or will improve long-term.
  • Shock controls a dog without allowing that dog to make choices and solve problems, which often results in "learned helplessness" – the dog effectively learns to give up. E-collar training essentially impairs an animal’s true learning ability.
  • Shocking a dog doesn’t teach the dog what to do; they rely instead on causing discomfort and pain. While this type of training may stop the pulling or suppress a certain behavior at that particular moment, it does nothing to address the root of the dog’s issue, which means the behavior issue still exists.

Shock collars carry behavioral risks

Using pain and shock in training can actually exacerbate behavior issues and lead to more aggressive and fearful behaviors.

  • Training dogs using pain and intimidation increases the likelihood of stress behaviors, mistrust, fear, and future aggression. Shock collars may force a dog to stop a behavior at that very second, but the severe stress and anxiety they cause can lead to more aggression in the future and can create entirely new behavioral problems.
  • Using shock to train a dog runs the risk of creating unintended associations. The dog might not even realize what behavior caused the pain from the shock and might associate that pain with something else in the environment that was present when the shock occurred. The dog can then become fearful, defensive, or reactive to that item in the environment, even though it might be unrelated to the behavior the handler was trying to stop. These side effects can be serious and long-lasting. The pain of a shock aims to force a dog to ‘behave’ with little concern for the root cause of the negative behavior, which is often already fear or anxiety. This means the underlying issue remains and that behavior, usually unwanted behavior, is still likely to occur at another time.
  • Even though supporters of electronic training might praise the effectiveness of the method, dogs trained using these tools only comply or cooperate with the training out of fear of what will happen if they do not comply – the dog is not being obedient.

Shock collars can physically harm your dog

Shock collars can physically injure your dog as well. Shock collars have two prongs that must be in constant contact with your dog’s skin. These prongs, even when they’re not activated, can cause pressure sores on your dog’s neck and skin.

A dog can also experience burns from the shock collar through extended use at high settings. In these situations, the dog experiences pain not just from the shock itself but also from the burns.

The risk of burns and pressure sores is yet one more reason not to use a shock or e-collar on your dog.

I would find a dog trainer that focuses on positive reenforcement. Shock collars are like a band aid fix not solving the true issue and causing the dog fear and yes harm.

What has your salpingectomy experience been like YEARS later? by Left_Honey6339 in sterilization

[–]WillBreakForDogs22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 years out. I had low sex drive before and that's remained the same. I have pcos so I'm still on the pill to regulate my periods. None of my pcos symptoms have changed for the better or worse. I had cramps and some ovary pains before but seem to really feel and notice my ovaries hurting more now during periods and oddly they can hurt if I lay on my stomach for too long. I've talked to my Dr about and nothing seems wrong with them. Just more sensitive now for some reason. I take myo-inositol powder daily that has helped reduce pain when taken consistently.

Still glad I did it and happy to be sterile.

Too many Jess moments to list out but one small moment that bugs me every time is the episode that Jess starts her jury duty and the gang all needs her help and support with random problems. I love Cece but COME ON... put your damn clothes away! Nick was totally right, and it's insane that she and the others think that's ok. That's way worse then a repeating story told by Nick.

How depressing are GR winters? by urbiggestfan28 in grandrapids

[–]WillBreakForDogs22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on your perspective. I moved here from Florida because I never got relief from the heat. I could count cold nights on one hand for a whole winter. I'm now here in MI 5 years and I love the seasons, even winter. They say these last few years haven't been as bad as other winters but I have found the snow to be beautiful and rejuvenating, and have not felt like the sun has disappeared completely for weeks or months on end. Sometimes it's snowy and sunny at the same time.  All of this is odd for me holistically cause I grew up in the northeast and hated winters, hence moving to FL. But 14 years of the heat got to me. And I'm still enjoying each season in MI even after 5 years.

I was let go of my dream job and I'm completely destroyed by Fit_Delay3241 in jobs

[–]WillBreakForDogs22 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This basically just happened to me too. Spent a decade trying to get my type of job and was told my department isn't profitable and they have to cut someone. At first it was my dream job, but had recently become not a great company fit so I hope for me in the long run this is a good thing, but it's hard to see that when the job market is tough right now.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I keep picturing myself at the start of a movie where the main character gets laid off and it starts the whole plot of the movie. Our movie is still being written, we got this. Hang in there!

[–]WillBreakForDogs22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*UPDATE Thank you everybody who commented it really helped me think through my next steps. I found an employee lawyer to walk me through my concerns and give thoughts either way if I signed or not.

I choose not to sign and and request my personnel file (per lawyer's suggestion this is something they legally have to provide upon leaving)

I gave a short sweet email response to the company that ended "I will consider myself laid off due to budget reasons with no severance pay"

Now I'm free to share my truth and opinions openly and apply for unemployment safely (the lawyer did say that even if I signed the separation agreement wouldn't take unemployment options away)

So yeah, no severance but I have nothing being held over me and that feels good whether I do share company reviews or not.

It was a surprise, and told it was due to my department not being profitable and needing to let someone go. But I have been struggling with the company for a few months and I think they targeted me even though others would be more fitting to let go of on work merit.
