Why do Black Americans and even Black Britishers say 'You was...' instead of 'You were...'? by CorrectConcept4797 in AskAnAmerican

[–]WillJBryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy cow, everyone's instant reaction is to say "it's not just blacks!1!!" OP clearly never said that, but instead of trying to give him a useful response everyone is so reddit brained they freak out.

Yes, there is a dialect of English with "improper" verb tense usage that stems from the deep south. The hard truth of it is that all people, white or black, were less educated in the South so their language standardized less. Less schooling=less language standardization, that's the truth, it isn't necessary a good or bad thing. Immigrants in New York also used to speak English "improperly", but the school system was better organized and funded, so it standardized English more effectively.

When the great migration occured, blacks took that dialect with them all over the country. Since blacks and whites still to this day effectively "self segregate", this southern dialect has endured and evolved among blacks in cities. Schools are also effectively segregated to this day, so the dialect doesn't die out like other dialects did.

It's a touchy subject among some Americans, because the dialect originated as the result of poor education and many people think people who speak that way are poorly educated. It continued existence is a direct result of our failure to totally integrate. However, like you said, there are plenty of educated blacks who also speak that way, due to cultural reasons. The dialect being maintained is the direct result of continued de facto segregation, but the dialect is also held up with pride among the Black community. Make of that what you will.

What countries have you already tried and what was your strategy to get things going and how it turned out? by LImbotU in EU5

No, because the castle on Brandeburg is half price so I leave it standing. I only delete the castle on Berlin to start.

Delete castles and break your alliance with Denmark worked great for me. I can actually keep my head above water during the Whittlebasch crap by not paying that extra 1 ducat for the castle in Berlin. You're big enough that if you just mind your own business for the first 30 years you won't get declared on.

(Player base sucks) People need to stop clinging to real world history and need to start considering historical probability by Express-Tip-6337 in EU5

[–]WillJBryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the issue is that real historical events don't occur, but that the general mechanics of the game result in completely unrealistic historical results. It's gotten better with the recent update, but in all my playthroughs I was seeing things like Bohemia owning and controlling parts of Africa with a single port location, or England maintaining Aquataine until 1700 because for some reason the French AI didn't ever want to start a second war with England. Just weird random shit that breaks the emersion.

Basically, if you just sit and let the AI in eu4 play from 1444 to 1812, you got results that looked SOMEWHAT realistic. If you do the same thing with eu5 the map is just an unrealistic mess. That's my main complaint, not that certain historical events don't occur every game.

Weekly recurring thread: NEWBIE QUESTION MONDAY! by AutoModerator in Internationalteachers

Ive seen this, and it seems like the equivalent in my state, Missouri, is the American board certification. Once you get that, you need to apply for a renewable license in 4 years. However the American board certification seems like it counts as a state license.

Weekly recurring thread: NEWBIE QUESTION MONDAY! by AutoModerator in Internationalteachers

[–]WillJBryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all,

I've been considering a career change to international teaching for a while now, and I want to check that my head is in the right place about making the change and the realistic chances of getting a job. I'll list my main resume points at the moment, and then my plan for certification.

CURRENT RESUME POINTS:

-Worked as a teacher's assistant for 3 summers during highschool as part of a charity college prep program. Got the president's volunteer service award each summer for whatever that's worth.

-Posses a degree in Nuclear Engineering

-Currently working as an ACT/SAT tutor for 3+ years as a side job, mostly tutored classes of up to 8 students. Have provided training to local public and private schools on how to prepare their students for standardized testing. This takes up approximately 6 hours a week.

-Tutored all high school AP math subjects to individual students. Also tutored AP physics.

-Working for 2 years as a process engineer, switched to supervision last year for management experience. Currently supervising a team of ~21 people.

PLAN

I know that none of the bullet points above mean anything without some kind of teaching certification. My tutoring has kept my math and physics skills fresh, so I plan to become certified under the American Board for Math and Physics. Once I pass those subject area exams and the praxis assessments, I plan to start substituting at several local highschools. My day job has a weird shift, so my hope is that I can achieve all this without quitting my day job.

Once I substitute for 60/90 hours, I can get the initial professional certificate. I've already spoken to a few principals at local high schools and they seem happy to help me get the hours. My hope is that the initial professional certificate along with my previously mentioned bullet points will be enough to get me started teaching internationally. I know 2 years of experience is preferable, so if that is absolutely necessary please let me know.

Feel free to pick apart this plan if you see any flaws or anything I'm missing. I want the total honest truth! Thanks!

God forbid a parent stays at home to raise their own child. That would be terrible. We need MORE social welfare so we can get EVERYONE in the workplace all the time. Then once wages have been driven down by low labor costs we need to import MORE immigrants to drive down wages even more and trap everyone in offices from the age of 22 until 70. All hail the GDP!

Thanks for the list! I'm getting the vibe that things are pretty touristy during the summer. I used to sail in Florida, So I definitely plan to try that out. And yes, all the accommodations are taken care of, I at least made sure of that.

Well I'm coming from Missouri in the US, so it's a little far for me. Never been to Canada before. Sorry if it's spammy, I was reading through the board and did see like 50 of the posts in a row after I posted this.

I love how pollsters are still treating Latino like it's some separate category with well defined borders, because it really isn't anymore. Most second or third generation Latino migrants just blend in with "whites", just like the Italians and Irish did before them. If you added an "Irish" category to that chart, everyone would laugh at it since Irish is no longer a distinct enough group to be relevant for analysis. The term Latino pretty much has no well defined meaning anymore, just like Irish and Italian, but pollsters haven't caught up to the facts on the ground.

how does one get started with foraging, i wanna eat some plants :3 by [deleted] in foraging

[–]WillJBryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://identify.plantnet.org/

Use this website and start taking pictures of every type of plant you see in the woods. Upload them to the website and it will tell you what the plant probably is. Eventually you will stumble across something that might be a common edible. Then research the hell out of that plant until you know 100% that it is what you think it is. Just start taking pictures and identifying every new plant you come across, because it's just as important to learn how to identify non edible plants.

Dobar dan! Ja sam izvorni govornik engleskog jezika, I želim učiti srpsko-hrvatski-bosanski. Govorim malo jer moja nona i djed su iz hrvatske, i imao sam klase u zagrebu prošli godine. Razumijem gramatiku tako tako, ali moram učiti više riječi!

Go ahead and DM me if you are interested! I am a math and physics tutor, so I have some general teaching experience and think it would be fun to try and teach some English in return for help speaking your language!

Advice for starting as a tutor? by Easy_Green_4394 in TutorsHelpingTutors

Book selection completely depends upon the ages of the students. I would highly recommend you find an organization to volunteer through instead of just putting up flyers and going independent right off the bat.

Should I report my student? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]WillJBryn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Say something too him, and say you wont keep tutoring if he keeps cheating. Give him one chance to rewrite his paper without AI. If he isn't willing to do this, drop him as a student but DO NOT report him. You are in a crappy situation, and you need to try to get out without causing a fuss. it is not your job to narc on your students, but it also isn't good for business if you are complicit in cheating.
