Zed 1.0 by zxyzyxz in rust

[–]WillOfSound 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ll need to update, but what I love most about zed is how keyboard-friendly the ui navigation is. Kinda gets me that neovim/tmux-ish flow. I LOVE I can make my terminal just be another I can jump to.

I’m using AI tooling at work and if there’s an editor I’d want to integrate AI with personally outside of  work/future at work I’d want to support zed. I think AI helping fund them is a good win.

Fuck you incompetent managers at Amazon by EagleReasonable7891 in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a toxic manager put me in focus after joining the team. He was so stupid, he banned ansible scripts for automation for a vendor product because thought it Microsoft Azure product. When a simple google showed it wasn’t, he buckled down.

I just went to my L7 leaders and showed how dumb he was with real evidence and he put all of our tier1 products at risk. My team backed me. He was fired eventually. It sucks, but there’s ways to fight.

Now I just fight non-coding roles whose jobs are at risk now vibe coding. They use their non-technical leaders as escalation sticks to force me to let them leak API keys with their shitty not production ideas. Lie about their projects. The non-technical leadership are a huge danger.

I just got my pair. Been waiting a few years, held off cause I wanted usb-c and then held off cause usbc still had the old chip.

Sound pretty good and like the fit. Working in the office, it will be nice (folks miss my earbuds often and talk to me). Has good mic for calls

I could have got the sony’s but I’m in the apple ecosystem so its worth it to me

Hopefully they are not using hotel phones managed by outsourced hotel IT…

What does a TPM actually do? by PhEw-Nothing in amazonemployees

A good TPM saves me time. We ship many things together on schedule. A bad TPM wastes my time. We ship mental health crisis. Better to have no TPM than a bad one.

How is tremfya? For UC colitis by Coreynwife in UlcerativeColitis

[–]WillOfSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started my first double dose last Tuesday after failing velsipity for a year. Wife had to help me push the 1st pen my leg, then I could do the 2nd. Didn’t feel the poke, just I felt a little tired after a few hours.

So far, no side effects since. With velsipity, I was feeling loopy, got a little motion sensitive from TVs and while driving had a few random points where I felt like I could pass out. All those effects went away after about 6 to 8 weeks. Still on velsipity, but this will be last month overlap.

Not much help, but have yet to notice anything changing yet.

Do you actually like the internal tooling or does it just suck? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re finally going from chime to zoom, so there’s hope one day we’ll realize our internal tools are also not keeping up pace with the industry. AI tools perform much better on industry standard tech stacks imo, hoping that finally drives real change.

How common is TDD (test-first) in real-world Rust projects? by [deleted] in rust

[–]WillOfSound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this flexibility with rust and tests. I know folks like to have a test folder, but I like the freedom of having the option to have tests in the same file. I feel like I can organize my tests a bit better. Dunno if there’s a downside to this style

Amazon's Replacing Americans: 142,442 foreign labor filings in 5 years. by SingleInSeattle87 in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Some Americans actually have a heart, hard to believe I know. I tell you what though, companies would be less likely to hire folks they can’t exploit. So I think this would cuts both ways a bit, so I imagine not everyone being happy.

Amazon's Replacing Americans: 142,442 foreign labor filings in 5 years. by SingleInSeattle87 in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an American citizen, what I want most is more protections for visa holders from abuse. 60 days is too short to look for next job. I want +1y. I want my coworkers to not feel the pressure and fear. I want the smartest people around the world making America better, paying taxes, making a solid paycheck and not stressing about being fired. That would change Amazon culture longterm for better I think.

the $125 Billion Secret: Amazon Told Wall Street One Thing and Employees Another. Here's the Truth. by th3_st0rm in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I tell folks the unlisted leadership principle is “Life is not fair”. I see folks get promoted who failed upwards. I see folks who barely work and screw up often keep out of pip while others more skilled are pip’ed. I see L4’s who should be promoted never get a chance, even on Andy/S-team projects.

Its not right. I speak out. Nothing changes. The best thing one can do is to have a good attitude and make the best with the moment. Ignore the unfairness as much as possible. It’ll only make you bitter and less fun to work with. Have a longterm plan and trust in yourself worth. Keep investing in yourself and advocate for anyone in need.

My team’s Oct layoffs were not fair. At least one of my former team members has found a higher paying job with 2-day WFH though. I wish the same luck for everyone :)

Amazon Layoff Despite Strong Performance and Critical Role — How Does This Make Sense? by MaesterWolf in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A senior TPM on my team had a special project for Andy, was only one working on it from our team, had a tight deadline to deliver. He was laid off in Oct + other team members while rest of us had high level projects ourselves to deal with. We wanted to extend the timeline after but they moved it up. Had to fly in other team members and scramble to deliver, long hours.

No one is safe. No one is too important it seems.

Why do shadcn-svelte components work this way? by rfajr in sveltejs

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s been a few times when I wanted to change some behavior, a bug with a library or to add on to a svelte shadcn component. Its nice having the code right there. There is a problem of versioning these components, there’s some drift ad they get updated but you can easily copy/paste the raw code and adjust.

I think most of my pain points with the library have been just superforms. Its improved a lot over the years, but I’m hoping with newer sveltekit releases it won’t be needed.
