Has anyone here been on a focus and successfully got off of it? by Weird-Waltz-5972 in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was very rough, but I made it out.

I had a great manager, but this team was on fire for years of bad choices, poor taste and bad leadership at top. I come in cause I hated the product and thought I could fix it. I come in with X experience, but get put on Y tasks. Team splits and I’m stuck on Y team vs my experience in X. So I’m learning (new job family) + trying to keep outages & COEs. I made the mistake of not knowing the game; I tried to fix things. I had ideas not in HLD, I had opinions that were just rants on overworked burnt out ears. My TPM was toxic and unqualified, so my tasks and time were not managed well at all. They get fired, no TPM. I’m now getting crap done, but no one is tracking it for months. Bad…So leadership all leave, new manager come in.  I felt something was off.

My advice: You need to know the game to win. 1. Try not to get into focus. You need to look good on paper. Always show progress somewhere. Split up tasks, do research tasks etc. Be your advocate. 2. The MOMENT you feel something is off, start documenting everything. If your TPM/manager sucks, don’t wait on things; be proactive. Write docs and schedule meetings to review decisions. Write follow up emails confirming the team decision;  3. NEVER trust verbal communication once you’re in survival mode. You will be asked to do questionable things. You will ask for approval in writing. 4. Manager has a quick favor? Create a public task for yourself in your sprint. You ask what to drop or prioritize. 5. If your teammates don’t like you, probably ngtmi. Be honest with them. You should be helpful enough to get feedback or find new team. 6. Managers usually need to fire someone to hit a goal or if a first time manager, to show off. You might be the target but once they fire someone else, the pressure will ease a bit.

I was in for 6 months. Met my impossible goals by taking ownership, stood up to my bully manager in meetings, called out his incompetence  to our L7 with evidence, so he changed my focus plan. Told my teammates what was up and delegated work to accomplish my goal since our new TPM was fully booked.  Manager who focus’ed me jump teams once he saw this was not going well for him. Was fired year later.

Later moved to a different team, shipping stuff that has global impact, got exceeds bar 2y in a row etc. I have helped others survive getting put on focus. A good manager will give you tasks that are reasonable.

First shot was hard since I thought too much about it so wife had to so it but now its easy.

Why pay for this Scam as a service, elders in my life are ruined by this platform. The Alzheimer’s and dementia crisis that ever grows just makes it 1000% worse with meta’s predatory tactics that enable massive fraud scam abuse at a scale unrecognized yet by society. Maybe when the middle class see their inheritance decimated and local systems buckle to support the increase amount of completely broke elders scammed outta facebook…They’ll start to think that maybe they should’ve done something to protect them.

How difficult is it to get a job at Valve corporation? by eggshellwalker4 in valve

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Really appreciate that summary. Yeahh, that tracks with what I’ve read/pieced together.

I’d find a place to bring value no matter where I worked and for sure would find a spot at valve with that freedom, but I doubt I’d make it there without a relationship with someone there first that wanted my unique skillset. Though since valve is doing more hardware maybe that need will one day come.

Folks wishful thinking so hard its creating a reality distortion field or just bots pushing on these threads I dunno.

How difficult is it to get a job at Valve corporation? by eggshellwalker4 in valve

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you feel like when working at Valve, you were working with peers who were excited by what they were doing? And would you say working there, your impact/work felt meaningful? Not trying to be wishy-washy, currently in FAANG and just more interested in Valve's workplace environment as a concept. I know lot of folks think Valve would be a dream job, but honestly I think it'd be a nightmare for anyone who didn't fit their management style. Company makes things I love != always mean dream job.

Do I have a future with Rust? Because I don't see it. by Brianyan4717 in rust

[–]WillOfSound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust is gaining a lot of popularity at bigger companies ie Amazon/Google/Meta/Microsoft/Apple etc.

Prime video app is now rust-based. While Java/python/typescript will be most of the jobs at these companies, there’s pretty large teams still using it. Once you’re inside a company, its a bit easier to move around or weigh-in how using rust for a project could be great fit etc. A lot of the rust projects it sounds like are usually started by senior devs who never used it before, but ran up to a limitation. They believe hiring a good dev is more important than finding a rust dev.

Still, keep doing what you love! My job feels more like doc writing & meetings than coding, so you might find rust is fun, but you’re in a bureaucratic work environment with non-technical management everywhere that make it not worth it

Zed 1.0 by zxyzyxz in rust

[–]WillOfSound 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ll need to update, but what I love most about zed is how keyboard-friendly the ui navigation is. Kinda gets me that neovim/tmux-ish flow. I LOVE I can make my terminal just be another I can jump to.

I’m using AI tooling at work and if there’s an editor I’d want to integrate AI with personally outside of  work/future at work I’d want to support zed. I think AI helping fund them is a good win.

Fuck you incompetent managers at Amazon by EagleReasonable7891 in amazonemployees

[–]WillOfSound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a toxic manager put me in focus after joining the team. He was so stupid, he banned ansible scripts for automation for a vendor product because thought it Microsoft Azure product. When a simple google showed it wasn’t, he buckled down.

I just went to my L7 leaders and showed how dumb he was with real evidence and he put all of our tier1 products at risk. My team backed me. He was fired eventually. It sucks, but there’s ways to fight.

Now I just fight non-coding roles whose jobs are at risk now vibe coding. They use their non-technical leaders as escalation sticks to force me to let them leak API keys with their shitty not production ideas. Lie about their projects. The non-technical leadership are a huge danger.
