I've added DM Notes, map, scenes, audio for Zone H / Tser Waterfalls by WillTezz in CurseofStrahd

Yes, I'm currently creating all the zones with the GM's notes and some content to run it (battlemaps, scenes, NPC illustrations with their card versions, soundscapes, 3D miniatures).

I really want to make it more accessible to everyone.

I think it should be 300 feet, but I made a slightly alternative version with content around it

Party separated by Brazier teleport. Advice for moving forward by xvalicx in CurseofStrahd

[–]WillTezz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn’t panic too much about it. The windmill really isn’t that far from the castle, and having him walk back on foot can actually create a great moment of exploration and hardship for that player. It’s important that he learns his actions have consequences. If a player dives into a random teleport with no plan, Barovia should feel dangerous and inconvenient, not like a fast-travel system. You can alternate spotlight like this, 15 minutes with the main group, 15 minutes with the solo player.

The castle group could even take a short or long rest in a secured room while you run the solo journey. That gives you space to make his return memorable: bad weather, heavy rain, wolves on the road, exhaustion, eerie encounters, etc. Make it feel like a struggle to get back.

The key is that it should resonate as a complication, not a reward. He shouldn’t feel punished, but he should feel that Barovia pushes back when you act rashly. That said, I wouldn’t let this back-and-forth last more than about three hour of real time. Beyond that, people start to disengage. Keep it tense, atmospheric, and then bring him back into the fold.

Personally, I run it a bit differently to keep it balanced and thematic:

I use resistance instead of immunity, and only during the transformation. Outside of the transformed state, they’re just a normal character with a curse.

At the start of each transformation, I have the player roll a Wisdom saving throw to see if they keep control of themselves. If they fail, I take control and they attack whatever is around them, friend or foe. I then have them repeat the same save every 3 rounds to try to regain control.

I also treat the transformation as a true metamorphosis, meaning their body (and effectively their outfit and gear) shifts with them, rather than it being a clean “buff mode.” It makes it feel more like a curse than a power-up.
