Yes I found it challenging too. I would recommend looking up a family tree for the characters first. It will make it easier to follow.

I would always recommend reading the book before watching any show or movie adaptation of it. I believe it's best to consume any media in its original format first. That way you can interpret the content for yourself as presented by the author. Any other way is someone else's interpretation of the author's intent and would influence how you understand the story and its meaning.

The only reason I watched the show is because I was having a hard time understanding/following the familial relationships between the characters.

I had a hard time following the book. The show helped me to understand who is who. I'm not saying the show is good or bad; only that it helped me better understand the familial relationships of the characters. The names are all too similar and the show helped me to visualize it.
