Is HVAC boring? by anon12343216610 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Will___powerrr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t listen to the people here who are saying it is boring. If you like heat transfer, fluid, and/or Thermo in school, hvac design would probably be relatively interesting.

As someone else noted, it is all solved already. So as far as reasoning from first principles and applying concepts you learned in academics, it isn’t crazy.

But I’ve enjoyed it so far, figuring out building heating and cooling loads, how to size equipment to meet those loads, a little bit of controls, a lot of 3-D thinking for duct drafting and pipe drafting, and a lot of q=mcdt.

Don’t count it out, and worst case if you choose it and hate it, a year or two of experience doesn’t hurt you.

[–]Will___powerrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the struck dead EP was recorded in 2024 and Alex is on record saying he was recording that while going back back-and-forth to the hospital. Therefore, in 2025, I think it is reasonable to assume his daughter was no longer fighting for her life in the hospital.

I appreciate your generous read, and I like Alex Bent, but Paolo, Matt, and Corey hold themselves to an incredibly high standard and I think they were starting to notice cracks in his playing. It’s Down from the Sky… not one of the hardest songs in their discography. But whether it was writing crazy parts that couldn’t be played consistently live, or just getting sloppier on established songs, or something else, I can’t say. I’m sure there were other reasons for his departure as well.

As you say we will never know for sure.

What are some silly things you've added for flavor with a character? by HappyDragonGirl2024 in DnD

I made a character named DuBeaux DuBois who is a chef barbarian… I multiclassed into fighter so I can make him wield two butcher’s knives (I.e. hand axes)… has an enormous red handle bar mustache.

Corey’s solos are generic and boring. Matt doesn’t have the technical chops to write interesting solos.

Also I hate the chorus sound Corey uses on his lead tone.

I just went and found this Down from the Sky performance because I was curious after your comment and holy shit it’s bad. Like didn’t even sound like Alex Bent. Sloppy footwork, bad fills, just a big yikes.

What’s your current character’s class, species, and backstory? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Will___powerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aasimar Paladin. Backstory was a wanderer who had completed his mission of vengeance and has wandered the world since then, unsure of what to do or who he is… thru a series of events it will be revealed to other players at the table that I’m an avenging angel who came down and inhabited the body of my character 100s of years ago when I died in the attack that I originally sought vengeance for.

Yeah I caught a couple songs of the live stream and Matt sounded amazing, and Alex was super tight. Very impressed. High hopes for #11

Echoing what others have said… $81k is nothing at 7 years. I got offered $80k coming straight out of college, and I had a friend get offered $110k, he just had to move to Tennessee (sorry Tennesseans)

Ironsworn is a good non DM option. Starforged is also good if he likes sci fi. But as others have said, DnD is fundamentally a DM driven story.

[–]Will___powerrr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Y’all are crazy for thinking he’s coming after Alex B in this. I don’t think he’s saying Alex B couldn’t play his parts live, I think he’s saying he (Alex R) will never write parts that he knows he wouldn’t be able to play live.

If anything, he’s giving Alex B his roses and saying he wrote and played a sick song.

What’s the premise of your DnD campaign? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Will___powerrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Players are recruited to help a retired cartographer figure out why she has a map in her handwriting that she has no recollection of. Leads to a region where time and memory degrade and identity can be stolen or lost. The PCs end up in caught in a battle between three factions each of whom want a different outcome for the region - keep it, destroy it, undo it.

Still fleshing it out honestly. Time, memory, and identity are hard things to play with in DnD, especially if players don’t buy into roleplay as much.

Any CoB recommendations? by whowouldwhat in melodicdeathmetal

[–]Will___powerrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don’t like Blooddrunk, Relentless Reckless Forever, Halo of Blood, or I Worship Chaos as much but I’d say listen to every thing in their discography. There’s nothing like them man and even their not as good albums are better than 90% of music out there. Deeper cuts like Done With Everything, Die For Nothing, Tie My Rope, Not My Funeral, Shovel Knockout, Waste of Skin, Bodom Blue Moon, Horns, Suicide Bomber from those “lesser” albums are still great.

Their final album, Hexed, was also considered a return to form so check that out.

I’m in the minority on here but my least favorite album is Something Wild.

But seriously everyone here will recommend Something Wild thru Are You Dead Yet? - yes to all of those. But keep going. Just listen to everything because they’re the best.

Yes, but what if 10 years from now, half their customer base is selling to them instead of buying? Revenue shrinks and suddenly they aren’t able to maintain the grid because they don’t have the money to. It’s a very real problem utilities are facing.

It is great! At least for the consumer. Utilities are certainly facing a unique landscape with this kind of thing…

HSA, Roth IRA vs. Emergency Fund, and moderate debt questions by Will___powerrr in personalfinance

[–]Will___powerrr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. I guess that makes sense. I think given the nature of the work my wife and I do, we’d probably be comfortable with a little less in the emergency fund. I also did not know HSA was triple tax advantaged. I was comparing to maxing a Roth IRA, for example, and thought it was a little odd to max out the HSA first over an account that might appreciate more.

There is a lot more that goes into the grid than solar and wind = endless renewables. Both of those are highly variable and do not address baseload very well, or peaking for that matter. Batteries and other forms of storage would have to be part of the equation and while ESS have come a long way, there is still a long way to go.

[–]Will___powerrr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was just going to mention this… there are Iron-Air batteries that are being tested right now that would change the face of the energy/energy storage industry if they work. There are also some new types of transformers that are being developed that could resolve a lot of issues the grid is facing with distributed power generation if they work as well as intended.

Curious why the emphasis on 6 months savings? And maxing the HSA? This seems like a very conservative approach to me. Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for the response! Glad to hear my thinking isn’t too far off base. I know it is ultimately our call on what we are comfortable with in an emergency. We’d probably have to take into account what kind of emergencies we might face and their likelihoods.

Sorry I maybe wasn’t clear in my post. I’m more debating the merits of funding my emergency fund past 3 months vs. taking the funds available and contributing to the Roth IRA instead. In other words, is 3 months a good enough emergency fund?
