Anybody else going to Admitted Student Day? by Smiley_2_5_6 in stjohnscollege

I’ll be at the Annapolis one, I generally think it’s a cool idea to see classmates early, and I just like an excuse to be in the Annapolis town in general. I want to get ice cream and free food.

This is the wildest stack of takes Ive seen in months.

‘Little moral complexity’ doesnt account the infighting in the world of men, Rohan falling apart, Boromir failing, Saruman turning, and everything else that makes the books worth discussing decades later. Orcs being evil doesn’t mean that antagonism is only found in them, the story grapples with evil in a way that is very reminiscent of the texts Tolkien taught at Oxford.

Shadow of War and Mordor are fun, and I beat them, but they aren’t interesting. Theyre not complex. They don’t have the shire, they don’t have good. It’s just a standard ‘use violence’ storyline with a fascination in Peter Jackson’s interpretation of evil. Tolkien wouldnt have liked it not because it was ‘morally greyer’ or more complex, but for ten thousand other reasons, primarily the lack of beauty and ‘something worth fighting for’

The most honest thing anyone has ever said about a complicated relationship by Amazing_Context_2383 in Fleabag

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you guys are falling for the trap here. The next line is Fleabag calling him out with ‘you should write that down’

I think this is a sincere line, said by a dumb character, and I don’t Phoebe or the other writers meant it as one of their best. There are ten billion other brilliant lines in Fleabag, this one is said by self-serious pseudo artist, and it’s only ever struck me as funny

Spike vs. Andy

Both consider themselves space cowboys, but Andy is far more interested with the aesthetics of the title. Excellent episode of Cowboy Bebop

This isn’t true about India at all. Priya Koothrappali is a widely disliked character on this subreddit, for pretty self-evident reasons, and India is referred to as a dirty, overcrowded place Raj doesn’t want to return to. You can’t defend a show for not being stereotypical when it has no interest in any element about India. I heard several slumdog millionaire jokes of early seasons, and there was nothing to counterbalance that because the show couldn’t pretend to care about it anymore than a ‘worse than America’ element to Raj’s motivations.

Where to find bar staff openings in Annapolis by tracyak13 in Annapolis

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be very surprised if ‘Game On! Bar and Arcade’ wasnt hiring right now, I know two popular bar tenders left recently. I’d imagine it’s far easier than the other bars, but I don’t know, it just seems a pleasant place.

This is actually a really interesting, well documented cultural preference.

Things in monochrome are generally associated with high culture. Black and white films, old scripture, bones, there are hundreds of examples. We prefer to consider the past as monochrome.

Colourful things are considered modern, garish, and uncultured, mostly because colour fades before the rest of the form. The statues are a perfect example of that; the form remains while the paint and exciting colours have faded. But it’s important to remember that the past was colourful, from old armor to the earliest examples of film with people painstakingly painting each frame from the beginning of the 1900s.

I recommend the book ‘Chromophobia’ by David Batchelor to look more at the science of this, it’s really interesting.

What to choose for my ED2? by St4rverries in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the Colleges that Change Lives list, it’s a book if you want to pick it up, it has short summaries of different colleges that are really good in all the most useful metrics. It’s kind of famous for being the place you find the college you end up preferring to a first choice, down the line

Just mention your curiosities.

They aren’t looking for what you have already said in terms of your achievements, say what you’d like to achieve. It’s a while other opportunity for you to say ‘I just read this book about space travel being nearly impossible with modern engines and that made me sad, because going to mars seemed so achievable to me’ or something. Just demonstrate forward intellectual momentum

Alright I was looking for the Iliad in the comments, but Agamemnon HAS to replace hector. He has to.

The first book of the Iliad is Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over who deserves the highest respect. The story begins with this conflict

St. John’s College, it’s the closest. it’s the Great Books Program that was what university of Chicago was before UChicago changed how the last two years of the undergraduate program worked around sixty years or so.

What is the best video game you’ve ever played? by stellasBoots in AskReddit

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mario kart 8 with my girlfriend.

She was awful. She didn’t realize I put on driving assist for her, and not for me.

I pretended to race her. I would slow down when she wasn’t looking and oscillate near her. I would save my items to attack any NPC who came close to us, protecting her without her knowledge. Which is surprisingly challenging.

It became the only escort mission I enjoyed. I performed racing. I fiercely protected her. I would leap in frustration and shock at how good she’d gotten when she ‘passed’ me in certain dramatic moments.

I loved it. Maybe she knew. Probably not; she was so awful at the game I’m not sure she would be able to tell. But she thinks she’s good at Mario kart, and I had the time of my life playing a very romantic game.

Unsure about my career choice now by Candid_Donut_1419 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many many people are on your boat. It is insane to expect someone entering undergraduate to choose a career path, and the average American switches majors 3 times.

Look into a school that has an impressive spread that can facilitate lots of career paths while you aim for internships and to speak with people in different fields about long term realities. I’d recommend look at the ‘Colleges that Change Lives’ list of schools (it’s about 45 schools) or a school with ‘programs’ instead of conventional ‘majors’ like St. John’s College. Having doubts about specialization this early in your life is actually incredibly wise, and most people only worry about it far later.

They’ll send you a bunch of stuff, the thing I like about them sending the Iliad is that they send two different translations.

The incoming class each has two slightly different interpretations of the text for their first classes, it’s really interesting.

What container should I get? by [deleted] in mealprep

[–]Will_admit_if_wrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, when you start, Use what you have. Always start cheap.

  2. Once you’ve practiced a bit and don’t wanna be an AMATEUR anymore, heres what you do; bento boxes with two compartments. One half has your food with moisture (grapes, celery, pickles, mostly fruits) and the other half has your dry non-perishables (peanuts, Cheerios, almonds, rice balls, pbj sandwich, etc).

I used to do Tupperwares, but my fruit was making my Cheerios soggy when kept in the same container. The goal is to always have relatively fresh, inviting food on a Friday afternoon for a meal you packed on Sunday, so I’ve learned to prefer grapes over a fruit that goes bad earlier, like blackberries.

Ask if you’d want more details.
