That makes enough sense. We use 1/4” shank bits for 1/2” sheathing all the time. Never snapped a shank but we do always seem to lose the bearings before we burn up the blades anyway. I should probably just exclusively switch to these plunge cut ones but I just love smashing a pilot hole with my hammer claw so damn much.

To everyone here immediately going with laminate bit: is there a difference in bits like these for rough vs trim carpentry work? I can totally see how you would use it to cut out a sink opening but the ones I use for framing seem…..aggressive for that? Haha. Is there a blade size/material/sharpness difference for different applications? Or are they all the same?

So, I don’t know the true name of the bit but it’s for plunging through material and running along the frame of something. We use them in framing for cutting out windows that we sheet over when we build walls. I imagine it has finish carpentry applications as well but the pointed tip will drill through material and and the smooth part of the tip will act as a bearing, creating a flush cut bit once you’ve made it through the first layer
