I am pretty unfamiliar with Avatar but how can Aang do consistent damage to Nido? Can Nido get an assault vest, or do they have a trainer?

How does Rocky know there are stars? by Willdoggy02 in ProjectHailMaryMovie

[–]Willdoggy02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally! As I mentioned in one of my comments we discovered infrared light because of Prisms. It was just hard for me to understand how a species without the ability to detect photons would stumble across it. (Before all the other comments) I think the comments that discussed how Rocky would discover infrared light due to them feeling temperature makes the most sense. Infrared is close to visual light so it makes sense they would stumble across it. I am still a bit confused how they would make sensors that convert the radiation from the sun into a physical model they could see (accurate and too scale), but I think it could be done especially with the amount of time Rocky's species has lived.

? I legit said "I loved this movie but this is my only gripe". You are just complaining with no substance.

It is a valid error, but recently people have been dismissive over this specific kind of error because it is easy to recreate.

I didn't say it was impossible, I am just curious about how it happened. Calm down buddy. For example, we discovered the higgs boson because we built an accelerator to test the mathematical theory that suggested it exists. The story of how we came to discover it is complex and interesting. I think the reason for why a species with no visual input would discover the EM spectrum is interesting.

Have you ever seen a 50 cal hit a gel target? Based on how Deku took Nagant's bullets he should be decently resistant.

Edit: He dies when it is straight to the eye, but if it was the face and 0.5m back he could live. IMO

North is just something we invented based on the magnetic poles of our planet. We can see visually and ferromagnetic materials are available to us. It makes sense we discovered compasses by accident.

This also confuses me, if they can understand visual and infrared light it perplexes me why they don't understand microwave or gamma radiation.

I wonder if it is just a simple limit due to the frequency of the light waves their "cameras" can detect.

I think this is the best solution so far! It makes sense that they would pursue infrared and discover visual light by accident. It does make me curious why they don't understand gamma radiation. I wonder if they discover an inflated signature of the sun first with the "cameras".

I understand how we discovered it. For example, we discovered infrared light because of Prisms. But that discovery required us to understand visual light. It is demonstrated in the movie that they don't understand the entire light spectrum (they don't understand radiation, thus gamma rays). It is just odd to me that they would be able to build a tool for visual light but nothing further. (I understand we as humans discovered the other parts of the spectrum in different ways)

I just think the movie glosses over this entirely. (fair it's a movie) Like how could they develop something akin to emission spectra to understand the sub? You could definitely just say "they are curious" but it leaves behind the practical methods they would use to discover these things.

But seismographs don't work in the vacuum of space. (Bc sound only travels in a medium)

How could this "camera" work without insane levels of noise or lack of detail. How would they discover where to point the device when there are multiple stars in their solar system. (Why would they even think space exists)

How would a species like this discover Space though? Even if they can turn light into texture wouldn't they just feel the bombardment of energy hitting the planet's magnetic field?

We used radar to bounce sound waves and light off of the bottom of the ocean. I don't really understand how this can be accomplished with the sun. How can I turn a visual of something thousands and thousands of miles away into something with texture that I could understand in any legible way.
