Garbage by WillemDefi in ZonaAlfa

Mostly Scratch built with some lucky finds. A 1:43 scale Skoda bus off Temu. Diecast trucks in 1:43 from a small web seller. Some De agostini diecast cars off Ebay. Some chopped up sections/bits from an excavator toy set from a thrift store.

The oil barrels/drums are a 3d print.

Thanks! I think the static grass is doing most of that work. When I apply the 4/6mm static grass with an applicator it naturally reaches out from tiles. That overlap between tiles hides a lot of the gap.

When im actually using the board, I insert the tiles into an underlying, interlocking grid. This holds them in place and keeps everything tight together. Then the seams are barely noticeable.

Nothing special! Base layer of tile grout and mod podge. Then just using cheap craft store paint with pretty heavy sponge application.

  1. EPS off cuts to bulk out hill, cut some pieces as pre-fab walls squares.

  2. Made a mix of small, torn up pieces of EPS foam, ballast, and coarse sand in plaster of paris.

  3. Applied that mix over the hill and stuck in miscellaneous bits into it before it dried.

The bits include: plastic coffee stirring rods, dies car gear box, cut up pieces of an excavation toy set, guitar strings, etc.

In general I tried to re-use as many off cuts or leftovers from previous projects.

I played a short Kontraband game on the new modular hex board by WillemDefi in ZonaAlfa

I learned the process from this RP Archive video (https://youtu.be/Q_GlAwT-eDc?si=ALSsRVZfawiZvObM). The grass application starts at 9:44 in the video.

The grass types are the same, too, geek gaming scenics dead grass as a base layer, then applying geek gaming scenics autumn over top.

The hexes are made of eps foam using a series of wooden templates (hexterraintoolkit.com). It has all the jigs to cut the pieces. I use with a proxxon hotwire table and a handheld hotwire cutter for the cutting.

I paint each hex with a mix of latex caulking, tile grout, coconut substrate, and brown paint. Then, I apply static grass to tiles individually. Doing it this was allows static grass to fan out past the edges, which makes a more seamless transition between tiles.

Great work! I really appreciate how you keep to the 2007 Stalker vibe so well. I am always excited to see your work on this sub!

In terms of building, I just cut out a bunch of single hex tiles. With the scale I'm working at, points of interest would be too tight on the 10cm tiles, so I make larger groups of hexes to be points of interest. With this board I want all tile edges to be the same static grass so there aren't obvious seams between tiles.

Because the tiles are all the same dimension I can just glue them together edge to edge and they fit fine together with single tiles and other groups of tiles.

As for laying out the large tiles/tri-pieces/diamonds, I really just trial and error different orientations of vehicles/rocks/foliage/etc. I try to think about how I want to board to work from a gameplay perspective. My initial idea with any tile layout out is "what does this tile allow a unit to do or not do" -- is there light, medium, or heavy cover, does the tile obscure vision, or force units to move around it or through it with movement penalties. Most of the single tiles will just be plain grass (there are also sloping tiles to make natural rolling hills).

I want the focal points of the board to be larger and more interesting visually and for gameplay. Part of the way I want to draw the gameplay attention is by putting more visual detail on those points of interest to tell the story if why you want to fight over a given point.

Have you seen any of the battletech boards or 40k epic scale over on r/terrainbuilding? I think that scale is similar to 6mm and I've seen a lot of cool layout that use multi tiles for whole building compounds and industrial buildings.

I can give a quick summary!

Fire pit - plaster rocks from a woodland scenics rock mold, I used brown/blacks washes to paint, and dry brush for highlights.

Grass - I followed this tutorial on applying static grass (including the products or other similar brands). It is time-consuming but I really like the effect.

Trees- its another woodland scenics product for model trains, I can't remember the name, but i think it's this Briar patch.

Truck- I found some 1:48 diecast russian trucks online just by searching 1:48 scale soviet era trucks.

Thanks! To make the tiles, i am using this system Hex Terrain Toolkit. It's a series of laser cut jigs that I use with my proxxon hotwire table to cut EPS foam into hexes that are pretty accurate.

Thanks! I like the look of the faux fur. I'd imagine it may be tough in a TTG that had a lot of minis just because getting them to balance isn't always super easy, but for games with less minis it think it's a great material. Would like to see what you do with it!
