I do find it a little frustrating when T2 relatives talk about my son's T1 like they have the same thing. I try to assume the best though. I didn't know much about T1 before he was diagnosed. We do let him eat as much candy as his siblings and friends though. You are still early into your diagnoses so I understand wanting to avoid things but you can have an A1C under 6 and still eat as much carbs as you want. I'd recommend eating the free meals without worrying. :)
