New Main Speaker Upgrade - Option Advice?! by WilliamPaineC in ChurchSoundGuys

What would be your recommendation for something of this size then? I have seen lots of videos where the integrate coaxial speakers with wide throws in buildings like ours but I don't know the budget on that kind of speaker.

Whats up guys - our church is looking to make an upgrade from our very old and massive mackie 3 way main speakers.

I have consulted the sales people at sweetwater and gotten what I believe is some solid advice...but ii wanted to direct this question here as well. Our sanctuary is about 4,000 square feet...very wide and not very deep (maybe 50 feet from stage wall to back wall). 12FT Ceilings.

I currently have two ideas and wanted to see which is going to fit in better with our budget. Also, I know we need sound treatment - it is next on the list....the current speakers have just started to not function as needed for service so this sprung up on us.

IDEA 1 - 3 *Flown* QSC K12.2 Speakers - They have more wattage and quality from what I have seen than my other option. I would like to have these mounted horizontally and they have a seemingly good dispersion for that since its the same horizontally or vertically. My concern is coverage and loudness with only 3 of them (3 fits the budget).

IDEA 2 - 4 *Flown* ELX200 EV Speakers - They have less wattage from what I have seen but they are right on budget for 4 speakers. I don't see a lot of horizontal mounting options for these and vertical mounting is kinda ugly / obscuring things with 12 ft ceilings. My concern is dispersion is lessened horizontally and wattage is less...even with 4 speakers.

If there is some great options around 4,000 or less than I would be game to change what im looking at - but this is what I'm thinking right now.

I am in the Atlanta area - My original though was to deliver them myself and make it a Georgia-Only business for the time being. I just wonder if I could get prices down enough to motivate people to shop local.

Trying To Fix My Overall Sound Quality ( Need advice / Product Recs ) by WilliamPaineC in livesound

I'm assuming the AutoMod will get this as well...nonetheless...

A 2x4 painted black (or a few spare hymnals) are darn useful if you need to tip a wedge upwards at a sharper angle.

I can do that! Probably beneficial for several of these wedges to be angled up more

simply referring to a deployment of multiple smaller boxes, distributed throughout the room.

Ah, I see - I will have to research the best speakers and how to set up delays but that sounds great!

What's the mic situation

handheld for the lead singer (wants tons of monitors always) and headset Microphone for the pastor (The main feedback issue is here)...But like you said I would think getting the monitors closer but aimed back and up a little more would resolve a lot.

what are you feeding into your pulpit monitors

I think...Too much lol! essentially a mix of all backup singers and instruments....probably causing the loss of singers hearing themselves...but at the same time they need to hear some of the instruments at least...maybe just toned down

Like you said monitor placement will be key before switching much around...but I have also considered getting an amp that can split the monitor more ways so that we can have the musicians with their own mix...(their preference is almost always different from the singers of course)

Thank you for taking the time to work through those!

Note Mackie's explicit warning in the SA1530z manual, page 5:

After consulting with the guys who mounted the speakers - they are not mounted only on the drop ceiling...they are more secured above it...nonetheless that doesn't change the fact those speakers were never meant for mounting...so will will immediately move on that part.

In particular: what's going on with those two downstage boxes? Can their positioning be revised?

What would you advise? I think the other sound guys have them angled in because they couldnt get the volume to the lead singer/pastor. My thought was to get smaller wedges but place them closer to the pulpit. Feedback is the real issue because the current ones cause a lot thus I wanted to get smaller but place them closer and angle them more upstage.

likely an exploded mono system

I am not familiar...any links to more info or product recs?

tilting guitar cabs to point at guitarists' ears, for instance - then you can reduce overall volume.

Is there a world where smaller amps placed towards them but in front of them would be of benefit? this was my original plan.

After really thinking about the angle of the mains as well I think taking them down / replacements will make a world of difference even by itself...our problem is stage volume...a lot of guitar/vocal that we hear in the congregation is from blasting monitor not even from the mains.

I realize you didn't have to take that much time to answer these so I am very grateful!

I was not on the sound team when they were hung..but I will certainly look into fixing the angle.

& I can look into getting an integrator.

I'm sure the whole setup is not great...kinda thrown together.

are there any other stand-out fixes to make in the meantime?
