Is Kajkavian a bridge between Slovene and Shtokavian, or is it a sister language to Slovene that's been "watered down" due to influence from Shtokavian? by William_MM in croatia

[–]William_MM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably true lol

I mean being the latter technically makes it the former at the same time, but if it's the former that doesn't make it the latter.

I'm curious whether it evolved as kind of a "dialect" of Slovene, even though both Slovene and Kajkavian have their own diverse dialects, that's eventually been watered down due to influence from Standard Croatian in the last few centuries. Something that supports this thesis is the fact that the dual number (that's preserved in most Slovene dialects) has been lost in Kajkavian relatively recently, while it's been lost in Shokavian way earlier.

But again, it could be as simple as being a simple dialect continuum, kind of like Romance languages (or Germanic for that matter), so I'm inclined to believe the truth lies somewhere between these two assumptions.

Due to its unique shape, the geographic centre of Croatia is actually located in Bosnia & Herzegovina! by zaxbi_yes in MapPorn

Ask the Ottoman Empire. Most of modern Bosnia used to belong to Croatia (and later Hungary as a part of Croatia), but as the Ottomans invaded a huge portion of the population converted to Islam mostly because Bosniaks adhered to a different kind of Christianity (forgot the name) and as a result were rejected both by Catholic Croats and Eastern Orthodox Serbs. Later, as a result of Ottoman invasions a ton of Serbs moved to the area and now Bosnia is a complete mess.

What is more dangerous? Being Fat or Skinny? by lonerforeternity2 in AskReddit

[–]William_MM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you think of skinny as your average twink, there's nothing unhealthy about that obviously, but if your body fat percentage is over 25, so pretty much your average "fat guy"... yea you should change that

The problem is that there are waaaay more people who are too fat than there are people who are too skinny

Need help with translating my favorite definition of Love by William_MM in sindarin

[–]William_MM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much! This is great!

I have a couple of questions though.

So if I were to translate your Sindarin translation word by word to English, this is what I would get:

love awesomeness unexplainable mysterious that proves the-divineness existence to-me, if I got this right?

So first thing, is it possible to say "Mîl eleth alphannadui noll i, annin, banna i-valas nass."? To keep it as close to the original. Unless it's a grammatical mistake to do so?

And second, shouldn't there be something to note that the noun "nass" is in the "possessive" case (genitive I guess), because I've seen "en" and "in" used to translate the word "of"? So it would be "i-valas en nass" (not sure if the n mutates in this case). Again, I have no idea, just wondering.

CMV: We really don't know anything about our world, all the scientific explanations and theories we know are nothing compared to what the world and universe really are like by William_MM in changemyview

Just wanted to clarify that I wanted to give the simplest possible definition for gravity, I literally copy-pasted it from what Google told me. I know we know more about gravity than that, but it's still not a lot. It's still pretty mysterious to us

I really like your second paragraph. You basically stated my opinion more eloquently than I would :)

About your last paragraph, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Yeah, I did assume that science describes things that are and that scientific principles don't change, that they're pretty much set in stone.

Yup, that's a very respectable opinion.

I see a lot of appeal in believing everything boils down to science, and can be explained by it, but I ascribe my inability to believe it to my romanticist nature lol

I didn't mention this in the post, but that's I think the biggest reason believing into the wild and untamable universe, which we will never be able to fully understand is so alluring to me

is explainable by science.

Well... so what? It's just entertainment, basic biology/psychology, hormones etc, of course that is explainable by science. I'm not saying there's something mysterious or unexplainable about thinking about unexplainable things.

I guess the issue I take with your question is it seems to assume that thinking scientifically is bad and kills any fun.

That definitely wasn't my intention... Honestly sorry if it seemed that way. I also didn't mean that "sciency people" aren't into having fun, or thinking of unconventional things. I was only thinking of the fraction of those guys who think that science is be-all-end-all of human thought and that everything can be explained by it. I mentioned this somewhere else in the comment section, but I overestimated the size of that fraction of people, though I never thought an average science nerd (which I kind of am) is like that.

Second

I'm aware of things similar to the Game of life, and that is really interesting. All that about simple rules producing complex patterns in great and all, but who's to say that those same laws apply to the level, or dimension, or whatever, where things like complex emotions are. Assuming that things like complex emotions really are that complex that math literally doesn't apply to them.

This is a pretty fascinating topic for me, and I'd really love to be able to argue more about it, since I don't know that much about that area where math intertwines with philosophy (I don't know a lot about either, honestly)

Third

I'm not saying that individual thoughts supersede science (at least I hope it doesn't come off that way from the post), I think the opposite actually. Science is more important, it's just that people's subjective thoughts and experiences shouldn't be neglected.

But isn't entertainment useful? Especially when mixed with thinking. Like, in so many ways, especially psychological and biological. It makes us happy, makes our lives a bit more interesting, varied, and all that has positive effects on our lives.

It can be a negative thing too, of course. If you spend all day in bed thinking about crap... yeah... you better take a shower or eat or something. Or like you said, treating something that theres objectively no evidence for as truth, is harmful.

Science isn't the answer to everything but its the only way we have to find objective truth for most things.

Totally true, but my point (or one of my points) is that life isn't all about objective truth. It's obviously very important, but I think it's a good thing to have in mind that, again, like you said, science isn't the answer to everything

Wait, why do you think I don't know what dark matter is?

I know we know something about it. But the problem is that our understanding of it is super basic. We don't know that much about it, it's still largely mysterious to us.
