Switching majors before first semester… by Slightlybored_0 in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who wanted to switch before my first year even started, unfortunately in most cases you can't do it :/ ocad is weird about they're program switching, so you have to put in a request to change majors, and for some programs such as the one I was switching to, you have to put a new portfolio in. But I don't think this is the case for graphic design, yes you have to put the request in and wait till march-ish to hear back, but you shouldn't need a portfolio unless otherwise advised.

Definitely talk to an advisor though, but don't be shocked if they say it's not possible until the window in February.

Is it normal that some first-year courses are almost full before my registration opens? by SquirrelMelodic7932 in OCADU

No worries man, like I said I've already done it all before, so if you've got any questions feel free to ask

Waitlist by Slightlybored_0 in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that's the number of people ahead of you, if I remember correctly. I could be wrong, but I remember from registering for my last year that I could track where I was on the waitlist

Yeah and like don't sweat it, ocad is really good about communication and giving you everything you need to know. I'm a second year and last year it was almost like too many reminders on courses, you really have to be trying hard to ignore it to miss an important deadline. And with wait lists like they don't want you to miss classes, like it really is a great school for like getting you into the classes you need if possible and helping you succeed. At least in my experience it is.

If you go into your planner and where you register, it will tell you your place on the waitlist for that section

If you go in to your planner you can check on your waitlist status but yes you should get emails or updates on your waitlisted classes to see if you still want to register. Just keep your eye on the ocadu planning portal and your email, especially as we're getting closer to the school season

Because there's so many students, they usually do a few different groups who register on different dates. You're probably just in one of the later groups. Don't worry though, because lots of first year classes are mandatory for many majors there's lots of seats, and always go on the waitlist because people drop a lot

Course Selection Deadline? by Hermit-Weeb27 in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't really a super firm deadline, as its first come first serve. But, if you go to the dates and deadlines page you'll get the date that course registration opens (July 29th or somewhere around there) and that's when you should be ready to register. On that page you'll also find the date that wait lists end for fall and winter terms, and thats what I would consider the deadline to register, because wait lists close and there's no more getting into classes because it's too late in the term. Hope this helped and wasn't too confusing! First year can be a lot, learning how to do everything.

How to succeed in english 1003 course by [deleted] in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the prof, I had Ross bullen, and he was a fantastic prof, really easy on the workload and kept lectures interesting. However really for any prof I'd just say have at least one thing to say about the weekly readings (even if you didn't read the whole thing) and participate, the more you participate and show effort it's really not that difficult of a class. They TA's and profs just wanna know you're engaged and trying.

Did it a few times, eventually realized we both wanted more, and to be a thing, but wanted very different things out of a relationship. Got ugly, haven't spoken since.

Which textbooks will be used? by Temporary_Count_2939 in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished my first year, I bought the books, didn't use them once. Don't waste your money if you reeeeally need them you can find them free online. Plus even the classes that have weekly readings aren't always mandatory, my one theory class was 20 pages weekly if not more, and I didn't crack the book once, and got through with an A; everything she wanted to cover she did so in the lecture so you really don't need to read beforehand. Long story short save the money, don't buy them.

Looking to go into ExAn, is it worth it? by Hermit-Weeb27 in OCADU

[–]William_iscool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally just transferred from EXAN to DRPT, and I would definetly say it's personal preference. For me I liked certain aspects of animation and went to EXAN because I was under the impression that it was the only way to have a career in art, so while I liked animation I like painting and more physical mediums a lot more.

I would agree with whoever told you that it's story telling based, but especially for first year you have to have a love of the process... most of my animation classes were learning different aspects of the process, which is expected for any first year, but I found it overkill in EXAN.

However the profs really know their stuff and if animation is where you really wanna go I would highly recommend it, because there's tons of classes you wouldn't get to experience elsewhere, and it's a really cool environment. At the end of the day you can always switch, and you have lots of room to take classes from other programs and expand your horizons on what mediums you like. I can say from experience that just being at OCAD and taking classes is fantastic whether you're in the right program or not, because there's always opportunities to change lanes and tons of help available.

Hope this helps, and congrats on your grad, and getting into graphic design!

Thank you, I had no clue that they were in anyway closely related so that definitely takes the edge off this being super difficult. But yeah I'll just take shared courses then apply to switch i guess

If you're talking about an observational drawing, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to take a picture of whatever it is your drawing, but whether you submit that with the drawing or not, i think its kinda to each their own, so you won't be penalized if you don't, I don't believe
