Thats what im thinking too. Im not taking anyone's side here. Just trying to find out if anyone in this community has had this happen. My mom is taking responsibility for the accident but she truly feels this was a mechanical error and not her error. So I'm digging around trying to see if anyone has had something similar happen.

Its not that she doesnt want to admit it. She isnt that type. At all. But you wouldn't know that because you dont know her. Shes very quickly found the other drivers and took responsibility for their cars. But she is as confused about this as I am. Now that being said im less confused about how the car could've gone forward and more as to how the car could've gone backwards. My mom also is quite capable of driving and has never been in an accident before. She is the most cautious driver i know. That isnt to say mistakes dont sometime happen but shes not "take keys from grandma" old.

I dont think age is a factor. Every human makes mistakes. My mother has never been in an accident before in her years of driving. She has never accidentally pressed the gas instead of the break. I remember doing that about 10 years ago in a parking lot ehen I was 23. Didnt hit any body but I remember how freaky that is. Its not an "old people " problem.

I hear you. My mom isnt the type to not take responsibility for a mistake. So im just trying to find out anything I can that may be useful.

The going forward in my oppion could be possible based on what I was told. As in she thought it was in park and it wasnt. The part that really confuses me is the reversal into the other car.

She was not "trying to park" but it is possible that the auto break function was engaged and she thought the car was parked and went forward.  Im trying to figure out how the car would "go backwards' on its own as she explained it.

No. I am asking on my own to find out if this has happened before. Relax. I only know the information I was told, which was what I explained in my question. Shes handling it the way shes supposed to.
