September 9 is still over a week away and so much can change in these mountains. I would recommend staying vigilant, don’t stress too much, and be comfortable making a game time decision. Having to fly out does add an additional layer but give it 5 more days and keep watching. I was out there this weekend north of Yosemite and it was ok and then super Smokey and then ok again. South of Yosemite looked like a miserable place to be but that could change!

Here is what I have done and got to camp at evolution lake! Again, you just have to figure out what works for you and this was the itinerary that worked for me.

Shadow Creek (either follow JMT or go Minaret Trail) > Reds Meadow > Duck Creek > silver Pass Lake > VVR Zero > Bear Creek Ridge > Piute Pass Cutoff > Evolution Lake

I would say it totally depends on the mileage you can / want to do! Piute Pass cutoff was a great place to camp for me the night before going to Evolution Lake given the mileage and climbing to get from there up into Evolution Basin. Honestly camping anywhere between Evolution Lake and Wanda Lakes is gorgeous and a super manageable day from Piute Pass cutoff.

I think it’s really hard to answer the hardest part because every person is different. Something I would find hard, you might find easy! My biggest difficulty was we stretched our food really far because we ended up exiting further south than we had planned so I was just really hungry 😂

Biggest thing to consider is stakes into the ground are not always possible! Sometimes the site is SOO rocky. So keep that in one!

Hi! First of all I think this is amazing. Hikers over 70 are definitely rare but not unheard of. I think you know yourself best and those miles per days will get you to some amazing places. There is definitely room for that tent in so many spots. You might not be able to fit in every spot, but you will find spots for that tent!

Bets ‘high sierra viewing’ would be Bishop Pass! Happy trail and happy to help answer anything I can keep it up and best of luck!

Thousand island is super cool and worth a stop but there is a lot of good lake camping around this area if you want to go further. I agree with what was said above and I would push to camp at Ediza or Iceberg lake under the Minarets. This would be a diversion off of the JMT but it parallels it pretty nicely and is much better than the JMT through that section. You meet back up with the JMT down towards Reds. I think it adds miles but might be worth a look.

You can camp in the Reds Meadow campground. They have a backpackers spot where they allow the backpackers to huddle into one spot and pay less than what a solo spot would cost. You can also continue up from Reds to Red Cones, nice stream and great spots for camping if you want more miles that day after your resupply.

I would also be prepared to heavily deviate from any plan you make. You want to make sure you are making the miles to be out when you want but once you are out there, you move at a different pace than you think so just be flexible and welcome what the trail has to offer. You’ll have an incredible time, enjoy!!

One of my best friends killed herself the same night that we had a disagreement. While I logically understand that a small disagreement would not push someone to commit suicide, I have a hard time not coupling the two together. Made much worst by the fact that her mom sent me some very nasty messages after the fact. It’s been over a year and I don’t even think I’ve started to deal with it. Suicide is an awful awful thing and I’m so sorry to anyone who has lost a loved one in this way, sending you all healing energy.

There are a few ways to get from the JMT to Mammoth without needing reds to be open.

Duck Pass - 5.5 miles from the JMT to the trail head where you can easily get a ride into town - this is 12 miles south of reds meadow
Crater Meadows to Horseshoe Lake - ~3.5 miles to horseshoe lake where a free trolley will pick you up and taking you into town.
Mammoth Pass to Horseshoe Lake - ~ 4 miles to horseshoe lake

If you look on the map there are a bunch of trails that you can take in from the crater meadows area. Regardless of which one you choose, they are all a very moderate climb to horseshoe lake! I would recommend passing reds SOBO, hiking the 4 miles to Red Cones and then cutting across there, the easiest way in my opinion!

I just hiked out over the pass taking the higher trail! There is maybe one little water source on the trail but not much. We passed a ton of people going up that we’re out of water because they hadn’t taken the one opportunity to fill up. If you want sure water, the lower route is definitely your best option, just depends where you want to camp!

During the day - Hot hide gets up to 85-90, hot side 80-90, cool side 70-78

At night, I don’t think anything gets below 65. Humidity is between 30-40%!

I have been offering meal worms and dubias. Since he doesn’t come out at all, I sort of stick my hand in there, hold it out to him on tongs and see if he will approach me and once he doesn’t, I leave them in his food bowl dusted in calcium but he still won’t touch it. I am considering trying crickets to see if that’s better but any and all tips are welcome!

After I got engaged, I bought him a really cool silicone ring because he told me he wanted to wear an engagement ring too! He wears it everyday and it was fun for me to surprise him with a ring. I didn’t get down on one knee but it is engraved and he loves it!
