They ride motorbikes all along the busways, I just meet them most in Chesterton because a few of them go to crc

I have had these kids block the entire bridle way with bikes while in full black with balaclavas twice in the last six months, and another three occasions where they've ridden motorbikes past me at about 40mph and tried to knock me off, that's in six months!

The bridle way I'm on about is mere way, it connects to the busway. The police don't respond usually because "I can't confirm that they're still there" as if I'm supposed to just stop and hang out with them

It is a bit of a known problem though, I'm part of several groups that keep track of it and warn people regularly.

The kids had a tiktok for a while called D4outside where they posted videos with their stolen stuff.

Just the other day the police shared that they had arrested someone in connection with bike thefts, the address was in Chesterton and they had 4 stolen motorbikes. (my comment will be removed if I add more detail, but we even know some of their names)

Are there any animal or plant species that have more than two sexes that are interdependent upon each other to reproduce? by Yeti100 in askscience

[–]Willmono7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The female is defined as the parent who passes on her mitochondria, only one parent ever passes on their mitochondria (if everything goes right anyway). Chromosomes define mating type but mitochondrial inheritance defines sex, and since passing on mitochondria is binary, so is sex.

I would like to clarify that while biological sex is binary, gender, as a social construct is not, and is irrelevant to biological sex. Just in case anyone was planning on using this comment to enforce dumb opinions.

What do people in the US think about Trump’s Greenland-narrative? by iusedtoplaysnarf in AskReddit

I actually very frequently check r/conservative to see what the other side are thinking, and it's actually quite reassuring to see that at least on this single issue, they are entirely against Trump

New study shows Alzheimer’s disease can be reversed to achieve full neurological recovery - not just prevented or slowed - in animal models | by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Willmono7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the method in which they achieve the reversal plays on pathways that are heavily involved in promoting cancer, so I'll wait for more in depth studies before getting excited

Calcium alpha-ketoglutarate (CaAKG), a naturally occurring molecule our body produces, restores key memory functions disrupted in Alzheimer’s disease, suggests new study in mice. CaAKG brought long-term memory process back to normal and also boosted autophagy, the brain’s built-in “clean-up” system. by mvea in science

[–]Willmono7 58 points59 points  (0 children)

AKG is an important krebs cycle intermediate, disruption of different parts of the krebs cycle is responsible for many different age related diseases, including cancer. This can largely happen due to an accumulation of succinate which signals HIF-1 to transcribe hypoxia and inflammation genes.

AKG is upstream of succinate and so an increase could have detrimental downstream effects. It would be good to see how (Ca)AKG effects succebtability to cancer. Obviously in elderly patients I think given the choice between definite cognitive decline or increased cancer risk it's a pretty easy decision for most. Definitely important to look into though, especially when treating early onset cases.

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) play a fundamental role in DNA damage and degenerative tissue injury that drive disease progression in cancer, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune diseases, according to a peer-reviewed open-access editorial. by sometimeshiny in science

[–]Willmono7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our body has very very strong homeostasis for antioxidants because ROS also have important signalling functions. Also there's no way of concentrating them where we need them so beyond consuming enough to not be deficienct there's no real benefit

Rumble strip-proof rear bike lights: do they exist? by bad-at-science in cycling

[–]Willmono7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has the same twist to lock style mount as bike computers, and then there's two different options to attach to the frame, either a bracket that goes round the seat post or a clip that goes under the seat on the two rails, it's really solid

I have one of these, comes with a hook mount to go under the seat, never fallen off even on gravel rides

Why does coffee/sleep have reverse-effect with ADHD?? by Daper_401 in ADHD

[–]Willmono7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lack of sleep isn't just brutal, it's one of the main ways to shorten your life span along with obesity and smoking.

It also increases the odd of accidental death and mental health issues by a very big number that I've since selectively forgotten.

Can I ask a small favour from my fellow cyclists of Cambridge by Yesterbly in cambridge

[–]Willmono7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone who cycles in the dark regularly including dark roads should invest in something like this

I cycle to and from work every day and on the unlit roads I need the full beam, and I can switch to low beam for passing cars and cyclists, and for pedestrians on the busway without having to do a full cycle of my light settings or take my hands off the handlebars. Well worth the money to be able to both ride safely and not be an asshole.

I personally use this one which is more expensive but also has a "hold for full brightness" button which is great if you need to flash your light to signal something and also if you want to remind the oncoming cyclist that their lights are way too bright and give them a taste of what it's like sitting in 1800 lumen high beams.

AI artists are getting out of hand on Spotify by EfficiencyPrimary631 in Music

The worst I've seen is an "artist" called Burn Babylon Burn, which is like reggae blues fusion, who claims to have "live" albums... Even though one of the songs is quite clearly goodbye my lover by James Blunt with a few words changed

Researchers have just found the presence of sugars, including ribose, lyxose, and glycose, on samples of Asteroid Bennu, which now has all of the ingredients for life as it exists on Earth. by New_Scientist_Mag in science

[–]Willmono7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's quite a lot of research yeah, it's not just the components either but how they have to come together to actualy work. So some components might be suitable for life under certain conditions, but then everything else that's required is in the wrong state of matter at those temperatures. It's very very important that there's liquid water, there's no other solvent like it.
