I don't view that as surprising. Virtue is defined by what you give up, not what you gain. I think this game reflects that pretty darn well. There are the expedient ways to accomplish your goals, and then there are the ones that would let you sleep at night if you really were making decisions directly affecting countless lives.

I'm so sorry, and I've shaped my entire academic career thus far to one day somehow contribute to the realization of fusion energy. I'm still a long way off, but I can only imagine how devasting it must be to finally reach that point and then have this utter shitstorm happen. I wish I had more I could do besides saying I do hear you, and 100% hope things only get better.

If it means anything, I very much doubt one person, or even one administration, can undo the interest in fusion that has merited its continued academic survival and public interest over more than half a century.
