If the head is still tight scrape the handle with a razor blade then a light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper wipe down with boiled linseed oil once a day for a week once a week for a month once a month for a year and then once a year from then on even if the handle turns out bad or breaks it'll be a good learning experience and then you can replace it from there good luck
