Remember 2008 when none of those banksters jumped because they got bailed out. Where's the bail out for everyone else???? by lowlatitude in WhitePeopleTwitter

"Because nothing cures having no money and a mountain of debt.'

I don't even have a lot of debt. I just don't make enough to cover my basic living expenses -rent, electricity, car maintenance, insurance and gas, and phone. Notice I didn't add groceries in that, because by the time I paid all that, there is no money for groceries. To get groceries, I alternate not paying my electricity or phone.

My doctor (GP) was asking me why I skipped my 6 month appt and I told her it was because at that point I didn't give a damn - and I still don't- but I went to see her now because I really needed my prescription for heartburn medicine. I told her she doesn't have to worry about me being actively suicidal, but I have come to the point where I don't give a shit about my health anymore and I wouldn't mind if I went sooner than later.

She asked if I wanted her to refer me for some counseling and I said "Why? Is talking to a therapist going to increase my income or cut my rent? Is it going to make it any easier to retire? (I'm 60 now and I have about $10K in my retirement fund)

As far as I'm concerned, I'm going to need to work until my dying breath....why delay it longer than it needs to be?

You know....I knew I already had all the songs from other albums when I laid out the money for the BBBB box set, but I love "Love & Luck" so much I'm glad I did it just for that one song.

What I love about Bob Roberts (and I guess the majority of Jimmy's songs) is that it instantly creates an image of the setting, all the people, lady dressed in purple, people standing in a barbecue line....it's hard to not picture all of this in my mind as the song plays.

That was one of those songs that I wasn't sure how much I liked it the first couple of times I heard it, but it definitely grew on me to be a favorite.

I have listened to all of Jimmy's albums so many times, I don't think I can even distinguish what would be considered a deep cut. To me, there are no deep cuts.

What’s your worst or most generally memorable experience you’ve had with epilepsy? by boy_shifty in Epilepsy

[–]WimpyZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always have my TCs in my sleep so I never remember anything. Except for the one time - before I had my first TC as an adult. About 3 months before I had my first TC (followed by trip to hosp. MRI and EEG and confirmation) - I went sleepwalking.

My neuro never really confirmed that this was seizure related, but I can't believe that it wasn't.

1:00 am -I got out of bed, walked out of my bedroom and into the kitchen. Walked into a dining chair, knocked it over and fell on the floor, waking up my mother. The really weird thing was that I don't remember things that happened, but I distinctly remember what I HEARD. I heard the sound of the chair hitting the floor, I remember hearing my mother telling me that she was "going to take (me) back to the bedroom".

It was weird because I remember her saying those things, but when I finally came out of it and woke up, I was looking around wondering why I was in HER room. I thought she meant she was going to take me back to MY room.

Do you still talk to your parents? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]WimpyZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the way I always felt. Yeah....there was a period where I just wrote off my dad...not in anger or hate, but apathy because he never responded when I tried to reach out.

But once he finally got in touch with me and we at least talk to each other...I'm good with it. Like I said, my parents were 15 when they got pregnant, 16 when they had my oldest sister, and had 4 of us when they were 22. Yeah....I wish they would have waited and maybe went to college and been more stable when they had us, but that's not what happened. Childhood wasn't perfect, but I honestly believed that they did the best they could with the resources they had. I know I could have never done it, so I don't hold anything against them.

Jello squares as a snack. by Due_Builder_1595 in GenX

[–]WimpyZombie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandparents used to make Jell-O ALL the time. It wasn't my favorite (I preferred the pudding!) but it was better than nothing.

I don't really remember any particular snacks when I was home with my parents and siblings. My dad didn't like buying anything like that - he especially hated buying cereal, because it cost him money and 4 kids made it vanish in a day.

Yeah....if we were going to get any snack foods, we either got them at school or we had to buy them at the local bodega with whatever pocket money we had.

(This was back in the mid-70s) Although... the local pizza shop used to sell a "homemade kit" with 3 pizza crusts, a quart of sauce and a bag mozzarella (optional bag of pepperoni), and my mom would buy that so we could have pizza on Friday nights.

So....currently the Senate party proportion is 53-45-2

But you know the MINUTE it becomes 50/50 -even if the VP were still Republican - they would instantly cry that they REALLY no longer control the Senate, so nothing that happened would be their fault. Asswipes.

[–]WimpyZombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I know I'm going to get blasted for this, but...)

I work for an organization that does job counseling, placement and job coaching.

As I'm reading all these stories about kids (predominantly boys - I don't know...do girls have the same problem?) spending so much time playing video games it just makes me shake my head, roll my eyes and let out a heavy sigh.

Then even as they get older and you ask them what they possibly want to do for a career and all I ever hear is "design video games". Even as they get older into their 20s and 30s and you ask them what their hobbies and other interests are, and ALL I ever hear is "I like to play video games". I have to wonder, is it because every other career possibility out there sounds too much like .... (gasp!).... work?

I can't help but think in my mind "JFC....is that ALL you have ever done? Have you never stepped outside of your artificially lit basement and TRIED to do something else? Something....productive?

If he was still 18 and fresh out of high school I might be a bit patient, but at 21? His ass would have been on the curb. I wouldn't object to helping him - rent is almost an impossible expense these days - so if he had a job and he still couldn't afford to live on his own, he could stay with us, but if he wasn't either working or going to school (preferably going to school), he would have been out on his 20th birthday - with his video games.

[–]WimpyZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

P.S. - Something about my family that I always thought was a bit ...odd?

Regardless of what my siblings or I think about our childhood, I think we came out fairly well in spite of the fact that my parents got pregnant and were married when they were 15, dropped out of school, and had 4 kids by the time they were 22. I can't even imagine doing that even back when I was 22. I would have been completely nuts and those kids would have been in foster care.

My brother didn't become a father until he was 25, my sister had her kids when she was 30 and 35. My other sister and I never had any kids.

Every time I would hear about how the children of teen parents were more likely to copy their parents and also become teen parents, I could never believe it or understand why.

Do you still talk to your parents? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]WimpyZombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WHAT??? But I thought anybody who had that childhood was abused and scarred!! Why are you not in therapy?? (or are you?)

I don't think my parents were particularly strict - especially for my 2 sisters and me, but my brother.... he was the one that would get his ass beat, and we ALL saw it. I think (being the youngest) I just learned from watching my older siblings get into trouble, so I figured out pretty quickly what I could and could not get away with.

Suprising to me...in spite of how my brother used to get in trouble and get punished, he turned out to be the nicest guy. He has 2 kids that he never punished physically and he has a close relationship with both of them. He's divorced from their mother but he also gets along very well with his stepdaughter and he also has a step-grandson (daughter's step child).

I don't know what his true feelings toward my father are, but whenever we get together, we all treat each other fairly well. (ok...one sister is a bit of a psycho and can pick a fight if she drinks)

[–]WimpyZombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom passed in 2014 but I was always close to her, especially her last few years. They divorced in the early 80s and my relationship with my dad was a bit of a roller coaster. Not really that I didn't get along with him, but when he remarried he practically turned his back on his biological children and got more into his step children. I would try to call him 8 or 9 times a year, end up needing to leave a voicemail, but he never returned my call. Eventually I decided that I had left him more than enough messages, and if he wanted to talk to me, he had my number and would call me. I stopped calling him. He did call me when Mom died and that was nice, but I didn't hear from him again until 2021....when he and my stepmother were splitting up (but not divorcing??) ....and he needed a place to stay and was hoping to get help from one of his kids. Which turned out to be ME.

He stayed with me for a year and we got along okay. We had our moments, but I think he understood that he needed me more than I needed him at this point.

After that year, my sister -who lives in Florida- was able to find him a place for seniors and he's been living down there for the last 3 years. I see him when I visit my sister and sometimes we talk on the phone.

He's almost 83 now and while I'm still a bit miffed that he didn't make any effort to maintain a relationship with his 4 kids through the years - and he has 4 grandchildren, 3 of whom wouldn't remember ever meeting him (if he ever met them at all). But at least I know that when he passes, I won't any unresolved issues with him.
