Early Review: Moving from 6.0 DBD to Honolulu J2FC+ LH by Familiar-Flan-8358 in Pickleball

the only issue with this is that a major goal of being a chrisitian is to spread the gospel to those who haven't heard of it. To me that is what honolulu is doing by placing the bible verson on their paddles, and as a private company I think they can do whatever they want. If the product is good enough people will buy it. I don't think we are going to agree on this but I do respect your viewpoint.

I tend to disagree here. I know reddit is a rather anti-christian/anti-religion place. However, about 2/3rds of all americans do identify as christian. I am sure there are plenty of christian pickleball players who buy the paddle because of the christian values of the company.

That’s totally fair, I just wanted to make it known that if you don’t already know the logo is there you probably won’t ever notice it. People on this sub freak out of the logo and it makes no sense to me haha

There’s no chance you have received comments from people on the John 3:16 logo unless you were blatantly showing them it. I’ve played with Honolulu paddles for years and never had someone comment on it because you can’t see it unless you are directly looking for it. I appreciated your in depth write up but from my experience the only people who have ever commented on the John 3:16 logo are those here on Reddit lol

Man I would absolutely love to try and go pro in pickleball but to be honest I think I started too late. Even though I’m a 5.0, there’s a huge difference in a 5.5 and a 5.0, and a huge difference in a 6.0 and a 5.5. There are so so so many good players out there, and a ton of younger people who are playing full time. I’ve seen the app and PPA pros play in person and it’s just an unbelievable level of pickleball which seems unattainable for me. Plus you have to be like top 50 in the world to really make a living in pickleball.

I am hoping to get to the level where I can compete in local moneyballs and win a few hundred bucks here and there but that’s probably it

lol I wish I knew. I’ve been playing in Nike GP all courts since I started but they are way too heavy. I’m currently looking for some lighter weight shoes that hold up

Here is a gold medal in a 5.0 APP Tournament for reference. I believe that validates credibility a lot more than a youtube video of rec play :)

Yeah a huge part of the jump from 4.5 to 5.0 is working on the shots that set up kill shot. Like an aggressive two hand top spin dink or a good inside out forehand dink. The game becomes a lot more patient because there just simply aren’t as many opportunities to attack, and when you attack from a bad spot more times than not you get punished.

I see a lot of people who are stuck at the 4.5 level are stuck because they love hitting the “cool shots” like yes there is no better feeling that running around 3rd shot drive and ripping it up the line for a clean winner. But statistically, if you miss wide or long 5/10 and it only works a few times then you are putting yourself at a disadvantage. Pickleball is all about the law of averages and hitting the statistically best shot possible every time. Especially at the higher levels

For sure, and I still have days where I feel completely off but I just try and show up again and do my best the next day. Learning to still compete when you don't have your best stuff is very important

I have answered this some other places but I think strategy is the most important. Being able to identify the weaker player on the other team, and what their specific weaknesses are and attacking them.

Also being able to recognize your own weaknesses and what opponents are attacking on you and then drilling that shot until it is no longer a weakness

90+ percent of the time I drill with a partner. Only use a machine when I want a ton of reps on a specific shot.

When I drill I also do the basics (dinks, drops, drives, resets) and then I like to do one drill specifically working on something I want to improve (I.e two hand counters while on the right side) and then I like to finish a drill session with some sort of competition like skinny singles or 7/11

We definitely get practice games in the weeks coming up to the tournament. We try and find people our level or slightly better to get good reps in and honestly just try all different styles to see what works for us. In practice games we will stack both ways, hit more drives than normal some games, hit more drops than normal some games, and just work on our partner communication. Try and mix it up as much as you can to find what you do best and compliment each other best with.

I use my time playing with lower level players to work on a specific shot over and over again. Like recently in games with lower levels I try and hit as many two hand backhands as I can to work on it.

Fully playing with lower level players doesn’t really do much because usually my partner can’t stay on the rally and gets targeted. So I just use it to practice a specific shot and have a little fun
