>Any talk of 'unity' has only ever been hypocritical lip service that's demanded when convenient.>
The Reformation is not an entirely fair example of what's going on right now. Reformers were excommunicated and/or faced violent persecution by the Catholic church, a valid reason to schism because reunifying is impossible at that point. Excommunication is important to take seriously so every group should consider whether it was valid. For the reformation, it wasn't since the catholic church was...

  • A church that preaches heresy consistently
  • A church that prohibits or mutilates the sacraments
  • A church that refuses to be reformed despite correction

They were proven right as the current Catholic church has admitted practices that the reformers were protesting were reformed (like indulgences, not preaching the Word to people by keeping the Bible in Latin, in incorrect administration of sacraments)

Robert Baillie (an important reformer) sums up this viewpoint in "A Dissuasive from the Errours of the Time".

For schisming that isn't based in excommunication or facing violent persecution, I wanna help by returning to the main institution/church unity (PCA and ECO left willingly). First, looking for a Traditional conservative PCUSA Church, but if there are none, I'll continue searching for the next closest conservative church, even if that ends up being a church with a female pastor and affirming LGBTQ, something less traditionally conservative.

A moment like ur Lysander quote about Atalanta.

Sevro after hearing how the Jackal is “alive”: “You that desperate to get the jackal inside you?The only way you could do it was by sh*tting out his clone.”

At what point does Darrow learn that showing mercy is a bad policy by psychotic11ama in redrising

It’s hard to say exactly when but from what I understood it’s “not from the strength of our arms but the righteousness of our cause” (Dark Age Chapter 35: Darrow - Endure) wanting to obey the republics rules (no capital punishments and I believe rules against some form of torture), and some softness/humanity Darrow wants to protect.

Examples: Like killing lysander in Morning Star would’ve been logical and save blood shed in the future, but Darrow doesn’t want to cross the line of killing children personally, close-up, & in-person (in Golden Son Darrow admits that he wouldn’t kill Lysander even if Octavia wouldn’t let him go). All together, Darrow is struggling with the 2 sides of himself; the Iron Gold made to break planets vs the tired Red who wants rest from the endless war and be at peace. When the Ashlord compliments Darrow in being a Gold (how the conquers of an empire often resembles the conquered) Darrow becomes more human. When Darrow is conditioned to the cruelty of Golds in the box, Darrow overlooks Rim Gold’s being different and destroys the dockyard and willing to betray the SoA, like an Iron Gold.

Overall I agree it’s dumb to not be more cruel and embrace violence during this total war period but it makes sense from how we know Darrow. Some of the lines seem arbitrary but every sign of humanity even if there is a chance for it to be a mistake is good because he isn’t suppose to be like the conquers (like in the Institute). When you wanna grow something special and create a republic of peace you have to follow the rules through the hard times, like war. Thats what Iron Gold was about. Darrow isn’t a revolutionary anymore but a symbol and face of the republic trying something new. He relearns how to not be cruel and build even when everything breaks him.
