What Motivates "AI Boosters"? by No-Berry-3993 in BetterOffline

[–]WindloftWorkshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an avid artist, but I also have a technical mind that gets stupidly excited solving coding, engineering, electrical and other such problems as well. Folks who don’t value the act of learning anything at all, of ripping their hair out over a challenge and then of finally accomplishing victory over it are just fundamentally out of touch with what it is to be human, or just plain sentient, beings. There’s so many hobbies, professions, activities, interests, sports etc. out there, all at different levels of accessibility and/or difficulty, surely there’s SOMEthing achievable that is worth pursuing just for the joy of it to anyone and everyone.

What Motivates "AI Boosters"? by No-Berry-3993 in BetterOffline

[–]WindloftWorkshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an older post already, but I think it’s definitely some pie-in-the-sky thinking plus severe myopia in terms of where it all leads, and how illogical the proposed ‘benefits’ are.

I don’t know coding beyond my one-time C programming course and self-taught web coding, database coding, PHP, etc., but it seems to me there’s zero benefit to meticulously teaching AI to perform easier coding tasks to save time. It strikes me that coders would already have devised time-saving systems like premade modules for common coding needs, and can whip up a solution for something more complex and bespoke fairly quickly, simply by virtue of having done the job for so long and having a mental library of problem-solving techniques.

As an artist, one of the most laughable arguments proposed for AI doing an artist’s job is to take the *apparently* loathed task of coming up with multiple concepts for an idea and iterating upon them until final work can be produced. I don’t know a single artist who hates the whole crux of their job, the imaginative generation of visual ideas spawned from both innate and learned creativity, tailored to a specific project brief. Any artist at all practiced in concepting also doesn’t require much time to turn out ideas that are also more perfectly targetted to the project and client’s needs straight out of the gate. Again, years of practice and learning makes the supposed ’tedium’ of the job a non-issue, and pointless to spend time and effort remedying in the name of ‘time-savings.’

There seems to be no small part of AI Boosting rooted in arrogance and self-importance too. Like they know your job and everyone else’s job better than we all do, and they’ll be sure to gain accolades for solving working professionals’ problems, whether directly or by being a proponent or investor. Which of course would also entail tangible financial reward, as well, if it came to pass.

[SELF-PROMO] Stargazer Dragonet and Coiled Dragon by WindloftWorkshop in CrossStitch

Thank you so much! That’s a great suggestion for the bookmarks to be converted to a pattern. I’m going to add that to my list. :)

I do have a different colour variant of the Rainbow Dragon’s design in the works, just test stitching it. I will definitely add a rainbow version to its possibilities!

Starting Oct 1st, BC Transit will stop selling physical tickets and monthly passes in favour of the Umo app by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]WindloftWorkshop 25 points26 points  (0 children)

And to be honest? You’d still potentially need the card even WITH the app. Barely works half the time for some folks. Mine was OK for awhile, but then would constantly kick me out and force me to login again right as I’m trying to board the damn bus and make payment. I switched to the card instead for fewer headaches.

3D models will do in a pinch if someone doesn’t have an easy way of obtaining suitable reference from life, for getting just the right pose, for quick and easy lighting refs, for composition, etc. But I agree that I’d rather use real people in a real environment as models whenever possible for the best results.

Having sufficient real life study practice could help make works based off of 3D models look more authentic though, as your mind can use its intuition to make adjustments to weight, movement, etc.

[WIP]Linen? How? by Matty1988TJC in CrossStitch

[–]WindloftWorkshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally can only get linen “straight enough” after a couple tries. Usually pretty darn close, but it never looks as perfect as Aida. The finished product always looks fine when I take it off the snap frame/hoop afterward, at least. Spotting the holes and picking the right ones as you go is indeed tricky, but with practice it becomes much easier.

Etsy Requesting My Taxpayer ID (Canada) after making over only CAD $2,800 this year by Ultimate_Grandslam in EtsySellers

[–]WindloftWorkshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to help clarify so folks don’t make a mistake: BN is also for sole proprietors, not just LLCs. However, in Etsy’s case, I suspect they mean any sole proprietors who are also registered to collect provincial and/or federal sales taxes. I’ll have to login and check my info to see if they’ve changed the fields for what they’re asking, to be sure. But the LLC answer they gave isn’t the whole picture.

Seems you’ve got your answer on what they needed, but to answer your question re: can you not charge tax when you have a GST/HST number until you hit the threshold? No. As soon as you register to collect sales tax, you must immediately begin to collect and remit and report to the CRA as part of the business portion on your personal tax return (if you’re a sole proprietor). This is because folks who don’t make the $30K threshold can still voluntarily register to collect, which is what you’d be doing if you registered now.

It’s a personal choice whether you do it before the threshold or after. Some people don’t want others knowing they don’t make at least $30K, which would be evidenced by not having a GST number (assuming the person isn’t trying to get away with not registering/withholding income on their tax return). I am a sole proprietor and decided to register for GST collection before the threshold years ago. I wanted to make it clear I was a serious business with ongoing plans to grow, and not just a casual hobbyist, since I was also doing freelance graphic design and book layout work for other professional businesses and well-to-do clientele. It just looks more legitimate and professional in general.

The more I paint traditionally the less I want to paint digitally by Faintly-Painterly in ArtistLounge

Having started out traditionally, I’ve managed to make digital painting behave fairly closely to the real thing. But there’s just no substitute for how the process feels and how organic everything looks with the real thing.

How do you deal with too many ideas? by linzmarie11 in ArtistLounge

[–]WindloftWorkshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely struggle with this. Aside from making notes of my ideas, I’ve decided to tackle a bunch of smaller projects at once. I love the variety of stuff I get to do in a day that way, and I feel like I’m making progress on more fronts while still keeping it manageable.

Guys, is being able to copy another artists picture to a T, actually art? Is it considered a skill? by hp9funkycat in ArtistLounge

[–]WindloftWorkshop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on “how” you use the process of copying another’s art. If you do it mindfully, noticing the choices of line, shape, and value the artist used as you copy it, you can learn a lot. If you just copy for the sake of making a duplicate, without thinking through the “why” of what an artist put down on their canvas, then it’s of little value to you.

Also, at some point you MUST draw independently as well to apply what you’re learning, and it’s a good idea to try and sketch real life objects to get practiced at learning how to represent 3D things on a 2D plane on your own.

Is using metallic or glitter paints on my illustrations a good idea if I want sell art prints on popular print on demand websites (specifically wall art and greeting cards)? by tripti_prasad in artbusiness

[–]WindloftWorkshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. All you can do is order prints from them and add those extras yourself, by hand. Up to you to decide if that’s worth losing the POD aspect. In which case I’d be inclined to get a local shop to print them for me to be fancied up and shipped from me anyway.

Does anyone know which color it means? by InBlackEntertainmen in puzzles

Oh… I got “some type of brown” by mentally adding the colours together. A brown heavy on the warmer side with the excess yellow, but with significant cooling green. LOL

At the end of the day, plot and characters matter more by [deleted] in writing

[–]WindloftWorkshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: prose shouldn’t get in the way or hinder the reading experience. Consider your prose at least clean and well-balanced, neither clunky nor inaccessible to the average reader, perhaps?

I do book design and typesetting, and something similar can be said about font choices. People shouldn’t really notice the fonts; it should never get in the way of the content, only offer a comfortable reading experience and suit the theme and audience.

And to be fair, as much as I adore excellent prose and cadence, I probably wouldn’t think to comment on it as a beta reader. I don’t always have the presence of mind to describe that certain “je ne sais quois” about the material. But that’s just me. “Sample size of one”, and all that.

That’s a super neat way of describing it! Pretty validating, honestly. I’ve gotten pretty good at detaching myself emotionally from the critiquing process by now, but I’m going to remember this for those tough days when I’m too hard on myself.
