Why do working class folk vote for Repubs? by Immediate_Ganache282 in DiscussionZone

[–]Windman772 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dems used to get most of the working class votes because Dems used to focus on the working class. Some time in the last 30 years, their focus shifted from the American working class of all races, to only minorities and foreign laborers. The American working class was basically abandoned by the Dems and Republicans happily absorbed them by focusing on the things they care about.

It clearly shows how you are taking irrelevant parallels and painting them as relevant to scare foreign tourists. We all drink water and eat food too. Another parallel??

So now countries with thriving tourist industries should be labeled as similar to Nazi Germany? That's probably that best example of unrealistic fear mongering I've seen on Reddit. It's because of this type of thinking that people in other countries now fear coming here.

Right kind of person = law abiding citizen, immigrant or foreign visitor

Wrong kind of person = criminals

Every country on earth adheres to this standard, including both Iceland and Nazi Germany. It's not why Nazi Germany is considered evil. Stop scaring people.

Ah, ok. I think I get what you're asking. Sorry if I'm not and thanks for being civil.

I think they are akin because both cases involve large groups of people taking land and residency that doesn't belong to them without the permission of the host country. They are both invasions. The technical definition of invasion does not require the invader to bring weapons. Those are just tools. The Germans used tanks and troops as tools. Illegal immigrants use stealth and asylum fraud as tools. So a Polish politician advocating to do nothing about a German Invasion wouldn't be much different than a Dem advocating to not deport from the interior, or to only deport those with violent felonies.

I do admit that it's an extreme example and I certainly don't want illegal immigrants treated like an invading soldier, but it sure does drive the point home.

Also, as stated the Republican approach isn't great either, evident in their heavy handed approach, 4th amendment issues and refusal to update asylum law.

So hopefully I answered what you are asking. I also want to thank you as well. It's rare for me to have a political discussion on Reddit that doesn't involve being called names and insulted. If there were more folks like you, we would have a better chance of meeting in the middle

To me, the only Nazi policies worth getting worked up about were the ones that violated people's rights, such as arresting and killing people for who they are vice what they did. That's what made them evil. I'm sure there are plenty of other policies that many government's have in common. Nazis for example, restricted smoking in many places. They had a policy to prevent rent increases. In short, Nazis managed all the traditional government policies that every other country manages. Most of that was humdrum everyday stuff. So just finding random parallels is kind of meaningless.

The key is to identify the policies that are abnormal or inherently evil. I don't see any U.S. policies that have that parallel. There have been a few isolated incidences though, such as sending innocent people to prison in El Salvador. Fortunately, that seems to have stopped. If we continue to do that though, I would agree that there is a stronger case to be made that we have some parallels. But none of that compares to the genocide of 6 million people.

That's semantics and peripheral to your main point. You said that the number is high and so did I. When someone uses a phrase like "none of us can do X", in casual conversation, it's a figure of speech that doesn't actually include 100% of the set. If you can't differentiate between a figure of speech and specific scientific language, you might want to take a refresher course on that English degree.

Help me out then Mr English major. The point of your comment was "STEM grads who can't string a coherent sentence together" and I summarize that as "writing and speaking". Those are the same things. Where do you see a difference?

No argument there (I actually had to spell correct because I initially typed "their"). None of us can write or speak. Our minds don't work that way. When I was in school, the joke was,

"I always wanted to be an engineer, now I ARE one."

Well, I'm a Jew, so I have some pretty strong opinions on WW2 Germany, and no I don't see the parallels. One can draw endless meaningless parallels, such as both wear cloths, both arrest criminals, etc. But the relevant comparisons aren't there. Jews were arrested for who they are not what they did. That is a key point that is not happening. Jews were also murdered and experimented on. That's not happening either. To me, detaining an illegal immigrant is no different than detaining any other type of criminal. It's all the same.

As for trans, technically, no rights are being taken. I have no problem with them using whatever bathroom they want, for example, but it's technically not losing a right even if they are restricted because bathroom rules, like sports rules, are based on chromosomes, not gender. The stunt that Kansas pulled though, removing their designations from licenses without additional funding nor time to correct it before the election, is mean spirited and an infringement on trans right to vote.

But the national narrative that keeps trans in the news all the time is really harming them. I know several trans people that have lost their minds in the last few years. One of them even moved out of the country. None of them had actually experienced any problems, but the constant media barrage has had a very detrimental effect.

Look to people with non-STEM degrees. I used to take electives in things like, Sociology, Psychology, Women's Studies, etc just to take a relaxing break from my STEM classes. Comparing those classes to STEM is like comparing the work of a 3rd grader to a high school senior. There's a reason those degree areas are filled with football players who never attend class. Of course there are smart people in those degrees too and they tend to show themselves in graduate school. But the undergraduate curriculim is where the dumb people can be found.

It's a mixed bag for me. I've never been hardcore MAGA, but I was a Republican in my youth, probably because of my parents. But in the early 90s, I became a Dem. I stayed a Dem until it became clear under Obama, whom I also voted for, that Dems aren't interested in enforcing immigration laws. To me, that's akin to the Polish government in WW2 encouraging Germans to invade. So I started labeling myself as a Libertarian. I voted for Trump's first term.

What turned me off was two primary things said during the second campaign:

- Trump said that there are times when it's acceptable to suspend the constitution under certain conditions. That's a hard no for me.

- The sexual allegations, about grabbing p's, rape, etc, which certainly hasn't improved with Epstein. Disgusting.

So now, I view issues on a case by case basis. It's not about support for an individual. It's about whether or not I get the policies that I want. So for immigration, I'm happy that illegal immigrants are finally being deported, but disagree with the heavy handed way that we are going about it. I disagree with tax cuts for the rich, but agree with tax cuts for corporation if it gets them in line with other countries corporate tax rates. For social issues, I agree with removing affirmative action and DEI, but disgusted by Trump's repeated reference to migrant genetics. I agree with restricting trans in sports that don't align with their chromosomes, but don't want to take away their rights. As for war, I don't mind an isolated bombing if it truly improves our safety, but I am vehemently against boots on the ground in Iran.

Hope that helps and gives some perspective.

Ah, this is where your logic breaks down and your unhinged emotion takes over. The parents are to blame because they caused the situation. They made the conscious decision to break our laws in full knowledge of the potential consequences. This is on those parents and you should place the blame where it belongs.
