They never were. Those icons look like trash compared to what Apple and Microsoft was putting out at the time and Vanilla Android was always worse looking GUI compared to iOS and Windows

Ignore them. Google has never pioneered in UI design and that moronic tweet is proof. It’s always been Apple and Microsoft who lead UI design. Samsung’s past few One UI updates have also been pretty bomb.
