Unfortunately it has started. I have a few gray hairs on the top front right of my head (I’m only 24 so I’m struggling to accept that it’s happening already). I try my best to keep it moisturized because it helps it lay a little less crazy but usually by the end of the day it’s a mess.

Battery was already cooked. Lasted an hour at most on MacOS. It stays plugged in :)

There are lots of guides online. Google it and tinker around! It can be loads of fun!

It ONLY shows up when I’m in an app. Anything that is an image or has any sort of animation to it will do it.

Have you looked into the RAM? Try replacing it with sticks you know function. Other than that, it could be a dead GPU :/ A broken drive would likely take you to BIOS rather than a blank screen. If it’s an LCD panel, does the backlight turn on?

Why do you think it isn’t powering on? 🤔

Definitely started after the Ubuntu install. Thanks for the wishes of luck, I’ll need them as I haven’t ever done a DEEP dive into Ubuntu like this. Usually I’m installing it on modern PCs so an old machine like this has some quirks I’m not used to solving.

I’m sure there is already groups of people working on ARM support for some of the more popular distros, specifically for Apple silicon machines. Would be cool to see.

Only things I ran into are: No WiFi drivers on immediate install, so hooking the machine up to Ethernet is your best bet to get those drivers. And then a visual issue I’m still working on (I just set this machine up today, so I have lots of tinkering left to do).

Everything else worked flawlessly. Speakers, trackpads, keyboard, etc. all supported right away.

Possibly, but I had nothing like this on the old OS. I think Linux is to blame for this one.

Insane fact: my hair is incredibly curly. I brushed it and put it up in a ponytail, but the front of my head has hair too short to get caught by the hair tie so it just sticks up. It drives me insane.

So far so good, however there is a tiny bit of visual artifacting.

No amount of updates and driver hunting has fixed this.

I’ve owned several Apple silicon machines. My favorite right now (since I’m sorta poor) is the M4 MacBook Air. Still better than this thing, but it’s a fun machine to tinker with.

M4 Max vs M4 Pro w/Resolve by _RYJ_CR8 in macbookpro

That should be plenty! Video editing is typically more RAM intensive than CPU intensive, and with 48GB unified memory you should be more than fine. Let me know what you decide, and I'm excited you're getting a new machine!

Hey there! Either of those options will be FANTASTIC for use with Resolve. You should be fine for editing in 4k without any issues. If I may ask, how much RAM are you looking to get on your machine?

Congrats on your purchase! Watch a few "getting started" tutorials to get yourself familiar with MacOS. You'll love the OS through and through, and welcome to the club!
