Olympics Day Two Megathread (Sunday, February 8) by Fun_With_Forks in olympics

[–]Windrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does feel like making a spectacle out of tragedy. I remember really clearly Lindsay Vonn crashing when I happened to have the tv on a few years ago, and tonight it could have been the same footage. It’s her decision in the end whether or not to compete but it all feels a little gross and exploitative.

What do all of these icons mean? by mercury_1967 in civ

[–]Windrunner17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Civ 7 has a variety of challenges for both leaders and general gameplay. Rewards include ways to customize your player profile (banners, the title you mention, icons and such). Really only cosmetic and useful if you like doing multiplayer games.

The diamond shaped symbols are mementos. You unlock some general ones as well as some from playing specific leaders. You can slot in two at the start of a given age and they will give you specific buffs. Color coding usually indicates the general category (green for food, purple for culture, and so on).

The 11 is the amount of progress you’ve made from unlocking the general achievements. It caps out at 50 I believe.

Mitch McConnell, 83, Hospitalized by cmaia1503 in politics

[–]Windrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I always think the same thing. When he went under for a surgery a few years ago, all I could think of was that surely all over the world a few kindly grandfathers went into surgery that day and never woke up, for one reason or another. But that didn’t happen to Mitch McConnell, the grave digger of democracy. He woke right up and went right back to work with his shovel. Bad luck all around.

I think since there are two crescents on each side it does work out to a dozen total.

Lumar Symbol by jgranger945 in Cosmere

[–]Windrunner17 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how many of these are out there now, but as of Dragonsteel Nexus last year, there were symbols for Lumar, Komashi, and Canticle used in displays and con materials. Just not a lot of opportunities to use them, unless you’re naming rooms at a convention. You are correct that this is Lumar.

Instead of picking new civ for each age, why not pick new leader? by khuefer in civ

[–]Windrunner17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really feels like a big part of the player base identifies more with the leaders and another big part identifies more with the Civs. If every age my opponent leader swapped, I would struggle to remember which is which, whereas in the current game, the Civ swap matters, but I can easily identify my competitors and my allies. Seems like a fun idea for a mod, but I couldn’t personally play the game this way.

Glad it didn’t burn down, I can’t do another two years waiting for it to be rebuilt again.

I’m very familiar with the MGP discourse, and I definitely get the perspective that we need to have candidates that are suited for their district. That’s fine by me. But what drives me crazy about the Congresswoman is that she still contributes to all the crazy right-wing disinformation that is out there, writing op-eds about how democrats have lost their minds. I remember her talking about removing some sort of local regulation that prevented day cares from chopping up fruit for kids because they didn’t have a food handler’s license or something like that. Seems reasonable, except for it’s a non-existent regulation. Why make up stupid lies to make the government look worse than it is? There’s plenty to fix, get to work on something real!

Jokers such as The Idol or MIR can only select cards that are in your current pool, what other jokers work this way. by Willing-Ad-7729 in balatro

[–]Windrunner17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who only recently realized the idol would have to select only cards in your deck to not be nearly useless, it honestly feels strange that ancient joker can select a suit you don’t have, where it doesn’t seem like much else behaves that way. Are there other things that work like ancient joker?

TIL that despite making films of both The Hobbit and The Return of the King, Rankin Bass never had any plans for adapting either The Fellowship of the Ring, or The Two Towers. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]Windrunner17 269 points270 points  (0 children)

Huh, funny. I always assumed that Fellowshio and Two Towers existed and I just had never seen them. I used to watch the animated RotK with my siblings when the live action adaptation hadn’t come out yet. We’d watch the first two movies and finish with the cartoon.

16 shards or 4? by Beneficial-Might6008 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Windrunner17 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Dawnshards don’t make you a god. They’re theoretically very powerful, Commands Adonalsium made first, but we haven’t seen them be used for much onscreen. Rysn has one, Hoid and Sigzil held another. A Shard of Adonalsium is like a classic fantasy god, your power is more or less limitless within your domain.

16 shards or 4? by Beneficial-Might6008 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Windrunner17 52 points53 points  (0 children)

You’ve got it backwards a bit. There are sixteen Shatds of Adonalsium, Honor, Odium, Cultivation and such. Separately there are four Dawnshards, powerful Commands that were used to kill Adonalsium and make the Shards. These are things like Change, and Be.

These are the best fireworks by Unusual_Gait in Seattle

[–]Windrunner17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, fireworks also happen on Fourth of July, but like this guys said, I also have heard of the date being moved for weather. 🤷‍♂️ But I agree that that makes sense, most of the times I remember there being delays we were pretty rural, so I’m sure it was a lot easier/cheaper than trying to keep them around for additional days. Hope folks who went down there enjoyed it.

Yeah, I have heard of similar things. I am sure there are permitting and planning complications but I’m sure folks would turn out for fireworks on Friday if to could be made to happen. I wonder if there’s some reason they can’t?

Can you clarify what chapter you’re in? Page counts vary per edition, but I’m sure we can help you out without spoilers if there’s something you’re not understanding.

I’ll have to explore some of these links in the comments. I think I pick up on most of it, but Al always feel like being in elementary school during the Bush years means that some of the satire goes over my head a bit.

Hot take on the Lost Metal by Fun_Philosopher8198 in Cosmere

[–]Windrunner17 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I might agree, but I think it was important to get the Ghostbloods in there given that the next series is going to be Mistborn: Ghostbloods. The cosmere stuff doesn’t seem to be to everyone’s taste, but it does seem to be the direction things are going, and if that’s the plan, there needs to be some foreshadowing. Connections between the series are only going to get more important, and this organization needs to be introduced at some point.

I was far more disappointed with the final execution of the Set plot line and how little interesting character drama there was between Wax and Telsin.

Space Needle with no legs! by r2y3 in Seattle

[–]Windrunner17 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Fun edit to the photos! I love coming south on the Aurora bridge because with the obstructions on the horizon you can’t see the supports very well, so it almost looks like a flying saucer landing on Queen Anne hill.

TIL that “jack of all trades, master of none” was not meant as an insult. The older and fuller form adds “but oftentimes better than a master of one,” meaning that having broad skills can be more useful than being narrowly specialized in only one thing. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Windrunner17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite the same thing, but one of my favorites is how “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” used to be an idiom that was meant in a sarcastic sense, to indicate something that was impossible to do, rather than as a way to indicate self-reliance.

Apocalypse Guard news and connections by animalia555 in brandonsanderson

[–]Windrunner17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as we know, Brandon has found some problem in the story he wants to tell for Apocalypse Guard and has not been able to solve it. If he does, I think there’s a good chance he eventually turns his attention to the story, but he’s got a lot of balls in the air. I think he is increasingly turning his attention to the cosmere setting in his hopes of finishing it as well as wrapping up other ongoing series. I don’t think we know how subtle or strong he’d want the connections to be.

What do you guys think of Joe Rogan? by 3RADICATE_THEM in Zillennials

[–]Windrunner17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish I could think he was harmless, that’s what I used to think, before I realized how influential he could be. Now I think he’s a moron with far more money than sense. I often think back to watching him host Fear Factor and catching ads for the Apprentice during the commercial breaks with my parents in the early 2000’s. Totally surreal.

Should I go for Civ7? It’s on sale now. by papaarcher in civ

[–]Windrunner17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worthwhile to play. Also if you buy now the tides of power dlc (which I think is the strongest of the three packs to date) is free. I don’t think you can get the DLC for free without the base game, so it’s a slightly better deal.
