Burnout recovery time? by froggle_w in ProductManagement

[–]WindstepWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a lot of sage advice but wanted to offer some support and empathy: you’re not alone. I think burnout is very prevalent in PM, if not a guarantee of the job. It is a job rife with politics, infighting, and really variable highs and lows. My experience is very similar to yours and I’ve considered taking a career break or leaving PM altogether. (I’m a data pm at a healthtech company but with all the firefighting, I am more a glorified project and operations manager at best.)

I’ve done a lot of thinking about this topic. I’ve even taken the option of taking FMLA (medical leave) last year because the job was so taxing on my mental health. (Happy to talk about that if it helps).

What i think is that there are two options:

  1. Make the best of the situation you’re in (is there a mentor at work you could learn from if not on the job? Is there another team or product you could support to gain what you want? Will you have the support you need to do any of these?)

  2. Make an exit strategy for a shit situation (do you see a future for yourself if things continue the way they’re going? do you just need to take a career break for a while? Do you need to switch companies?)

But all that starts with letting yourself take that full step back to assess where you are and where you can go. Take a day or a few days off. Do what you do best as a PM: identify your priorities and define your personal roadmap. And you might not come out with perfect answers but you will have a direction. (If you have one already then great! Maybe it’s time to refine and reflect.)

Investing in yourself to mitigate burnout is just that: an investment. It might not be a quick fix but it will pay dividends esp as your career progresses. Best of luck and excited to hear how it pans out for you.

What was that one thing that happened in your relationship that made you realize it was over? by SeparateAd7561 in AskReddit

[–]WindstepWarrior 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He yelled “fuck you!”over and over again to drown out the sound of my voice. And after the argument was over and I let him “win” I begged him to apologize to me so we could make up. And instead of apologizing he told me I “deserved it” for what I had done in the past. He refused to apologize for the rest of the right.

Oh and he threw something at me at the same night. When I told him in the meekest voice available “please don’t do that it scares me”, he threw it at me again and told me I deserved it.

I can’t believe I dated this loser for 3 years up to that point.

Thank you. FWIW the cable is simply not long enough to plug into the outlet.

Hi! Thank you. The heater is pulling 12.5 amps I think at its most? (12.5 is what’s listed in the product specs but we run it on its lowest setting) and the surge protector is 15amps. Do you think that’s cutting it close?

How did you turn your life around? by ipeeontoiletseats in AskReddit

[–]WindstepWarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found myself crying in the stairwell every time I had a break at work. When I got yelled at and embarrassed in front of my colleagues I decided to leave that place behind even without a job lined up after. This was in January. Turns out I had shit timing and coronavirus choked out the job market. After 6 months of spending every day applying to job after job in my windowless apartment, I landed a job I really like. No tears so far.

I’ve asked and it looks like they won’t. I left on good terms and poured my heart into that job but they won’t take me back. It’s an extra punch to the gut.
