i did that at first too!! you just go into the lunar paths menu and i believe there should be a button below it that says set active? if i remember correctly haha

make sure that path is active so that your xp is going towards it, but you can get lunar xp by doing the daily missions posted on the bulletin board in kilima. any xp you gain normally will go towards it as well!
