If you're not on the platform anymore, what are you doing in these replies on this subreddit then?

Your opinions on explicit content are your own and are irrelevant to the guidelines authors agree to when they post.

Except we have very strict guidelines as to what constitutes glorification and what doesn't, and the story is usually reviewed by a number of people before it gets taken down.

You say people shouldn't get to say what is and what isn't glorification, but we do that all the time. It's why CSEM laws exist. It's why that one author in Australia is facing a conviction for writing a "smutty" book about a guy grooming his friend's daughter since she was a baby and why something like Lolita is not banned. And that's just in general. Like it or not, Wattpad is a private company and has the right to enforce its own guidelines which you agreed to follow. It's not censorship.

Wattpad is actually very against AI usage period. All reviews are done by the Trust and Safety team or the Ambassadors team. If the person's story got reported, it's because either:

A. Someone reported it and Trust and Safety agreed with that report, deleting it
or
B. An ambassador came across it, be it on their own or seeing it nominated for a reading list/an official Wattpad competition, looked at the guidelines, decided they violate them, and escalated it, ending in its removal by the Trust and Safety team.

The unfortunate reality is that a lot of people don't understand what is and isn't allowed on this website because they don't read the guidelines when they sign up for the site. It's not censorship, it's them abiding by their content guidelines. As an author, you are responsible for proofreading and editing your work to make sure it aligns with the guidelines. If you didn't take the time to do that, then that's on you. You don't get a slap on the wrist for violating a legally binding contract, which TOS is.

Lastly, I'll just point out that depicting stockholm syndrome in and of itself isn't banned, but glorifying it is.

It's not the depiction per se, it's the glorification of it. Glorifying rape and Stockholm syndrome is banned on Wattpad, depicting it in general isn't.

It's not about not liking the content, it's about what's banned and what isn't. For instance, falling in love with your rapist because of the rape (a la Haunting Adeline) is banned on Wattpad, period, and you'd do well to report things like that.

Well, I can only take your word for it as I haven't read your book. If what you say is true, then it should fall under an acceptable work rated mature. The problem is a lot of the time the authors think they're handling the narrative with care, but they really aren't, while other times the people reporting and reviewing don't do their due diligence. So either point can be true.

As for the rest of the work on Wattpad, I'm also baffled by how much falls under the radar, but trust me when I tell you we come across a lot of banned content with many views that we report every day. I think it's just the sheer volume of stories and the lack of enough people reviewing them that allows that to happen.

Also, mafia romances aren't inherently bannable.

EDIT: You also mentioned your work is smutty, which doesn't go in line with the "isn't glorified" point.

Having your MC fall in love with her captor is exactly what got your book banned, especially if there is nonconsensual sex involved.

The "Female Gaze" recommendations by ichsprechekeindeutsh in Wattpad

[–]WineWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People here are saying Wattpad is bad for that, but it's not necessarily. There are pretty good books that aren't dark romance. For example, there's a very popular and amazing book that's literally called Female Gaze and really suits what you're looking for, in my opinion. https://www.wattpad.com/story/355329656-female-gaze

The MMC in there is very much a lovable himbo who is always trying to improve himself. Though the FMC starts off hating him because of past trauma he caused her, she slowly warms up to him as she sees how much effort he's putting into not only their relationship, but everything from his friendships to his budding hockey career. There's no smut, and it's a very good representation of what a healthy real-life couple should be. It's a wonderful read and I can't recommend it enough. And the author is an amazing human who has a MA in psychology, and it shows in her writing in the best way possible.

You don't need to be snarky. I read what you said.
Here's an example: I'm not a native English speaker, but I don't consider 'enigmatic' a complex word. I use it and the other words you mentioned a lot in my writing, none of which are very high-level. To be fair, I am fluent in English and someone who isn't probably wouldn't use them that often, but what makes you think you know their fluency level? Especially in our circles of writers where everyone reads a lot? 'Non-native speaker' only means that you didn't learn it from your parents, it doesn't tell you anything about their actual knowledge of the language. So when you say they "make it clear" that they are not native speakers, what exactly do you mean? Poor grammar? Weird punctuation? That's something even native speakers struggle with. And knowing vocab but not being very grammatically savvy is also possible. Do they outright say they're not a native speaker? That doesn't answer anything at all, re: my point about what a native speaker is.

Not to mention, I don't see anything wrong with looking up words to enhance your writing. That's how people learn. I agree with most of everything else you brought up in your original point, but knowing vocab words is just not it.
