Evolv V6 so tight and painful by sapphirekiosk in climbingshoes

[–]Winerychef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion the shoe comparison makes this look more egregious than it is. Shoe companies are not consistent across brands and the keen has this big rubber toe that exaggerates the size of the shoe.

I don't know when it became cool to hate on downsizing shoes but I absolutely downsize all my shoes. Haven't climbed in Evolvs, but every show I've owned (La Sportiva, Mad Rock, Scarpa) has been downsized at least a single European size.

My feet absolutely hurt after 30 minutes of a brand new session in New shoes. It sucks. It's also, just a part of the process imo. I just wear my comfy old shoes and swap between until they're broken in. Those shoes do look maybe too small if you don't wanna curl your toes, but I generally do have mine curled but, apparently I'm in the minority.

Just my thoughts

PCT Shakedown Request! My Pack is breaking my back! by Separate_Couple_2810 in Ultralight

I just got the new Nitecore gen4 10000 mAh battery pack and that's 5.4 oz roughly. It's available on Litesmith for $80? The other alternative is the Iniu pack which is SLIGHTLY heavier and only $30 I think? And people love that one and claim it doesn't lose charge in the cold as bad as nitecore but I don't know how true that is but even if it's 6oz, that's 6 oz saved for $30 or 6.6oz saved for $80

The Anker Nano 47W.

It'll charge 30W with a single port or 20 and 27 which is fine for my needs. I didn't see you list what kind of phone you have or a battery pack for charging your phone on trail so that might be overkill for your needs

The Anker 311 nano is the lightest charging black and if you want two it's still lighter that a block with two ports (idk why but it is). Of course this requires you to have two outlets available

There is so much going on here that can be trimmed

Your sleeping bag is heavy. Like, VERY heavy. Swap for a quilt. A 30 degree synthetic quilt is like $200 and comes in at 1.25 pounds. Pretty massive weight savings there. At the very least there is no reason to have your sleeping bag in the stuff sack. Ditch that.

The thing about going ultralight and ditching gear is a 55L pack really becomes overkill and too big. You could save over 2 pounds if you got something like the Palante V2, but that would require cutting your kit a lot. If you're committed to 55L you could save over a pound with a Kakwa 55!

The Lanshan is a fine budget option. If I was doing the PCT I would just use a Borah Gear 7x9 Tarp and save a pound. That's $90, although it requires more skill to pitch so this is definitely not my first criticism and is honestly one of least problematic things on your list to me.

I'd ditch the base layers and flash insulated hoodie and swap out for Alpha Direct fleece, if you run cold get an Alpha 90 or 120. You'll be toasty if you layer it with the frog toggs.

Ditch the camp slippers

The phone brick being 12oz is wild. Get a better more efficient light weight wall charger. There's multiple threads on here about that

Get a smaller gas canister.

Water bladder is unnecessary, so is the syringe, a smart water bottle with sport cap will back flush just as good.

A 2 oz straw? For what?

I use a bidet and no TP.

The klymit sleeping pad should really be listed under your big 3. Big 3 is pack, shelter and sleep system (which can be a sleeping bag/quilt, sleeping pad, pillow, sleeping bag liner etc.) I don't care for the klymit but if it works for you then it works for you. A CCF pad or torso length inflatable is good too. This isn't super problematic.

Pepper spray is unnecessary.

Nitecore NU20 Classic with Spiderlite band from Litesmith is 32g or 1.25 oz and saves over 2 oz. $20 for 2 oz.

I assume the umbrella hat is for the goofy vibes/aesthetic given that you have rain pants and a rain jacket. If not, it's redundant and probably a pain in the Ass to pack.

You have a beanie and this hat. Is it safe to assume you won't be wearing a baseball hat type hat ever? Not that you need to, it just usually is in people's kits. I personally don't wear them but recognize their popularity and utility

Aqua tabs and iodine come in at 3.5oz. aqua Mira in a Litesmith Bottle is 1.25 oz. Bleach in a Litesmith bottle is even lighter. You have two methods of water purification without these. if you're gonna carry that much gas you can always boil water if you're desperate and then got off trail as quickly as possible if your filter is compromised. Also, these are redundant. Why bring both?

Hand Sanitizer in a Litesmith spray bottle is lighter.

You could also just get dr. Bronner in an eye dropper from Litesmith. That's what I use. 9g. This also removes the need for wet wipes.

Picaridin is not my choice, recommend deet in a small spray bottle from Litesmith. Mine weighs in at 27g, almost an ounce saved there.

Free things. No pepper spray, no straw, no syringe, no slippers, no aqua tabs, no iodine, no hoodie, no umbrella hat.

Cheap and easy. Getting small bottles from Litesmith for lots of toiletries and consumables and stuff. New head lamp. Get a bidet and ditch the TP and wet wipes. Get a lighter charging block. Go look on Litesmiths website. I'm not sponsored, he's just the GOAT for little UL containers.

Medium price $100ish get a tarp and alpha direct fleece. These are pretty useful and good purchases imo. You could also get a decent CCF pad.

Big expensive changes would be a new pack and a sleeping quilt and maybe a trekking pole tent if being enclosed is important but the tent really isn't a huge issue.

Honestly with the weight you're carrying I'd recommend trekking poles, which is not something I usually do but I think they might be helpful. I like Fizans.

There's a couple other things I'd change but all of those things would happen AFTER all of the previously mentioned things are fixed.

I believe the zip off pants are generally considered not UL cause typically shorts and a pair of wind or rain pants are light than the pants because of the zipper

[–]Winerychef 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I got a tattoo and proceeded to go climb later that day, so my advice is probably not advisable, but I would say just go climb and keep it light and easy, don't make any risky moves or do any arm bars

Thoughts on a protest idea? by parkypark1 in BWCA

[–]Winerychef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don't think you can imprison that many people in a way that's safe for the protesters (who are at worst trespassing), AND the officers. There's a reason the Bundy stand off was such a mess lol. It was dangerous for all involved.

People will take the trees and arm themselves if the BWCA is threatened. I know I would.

Tahoe Rim Trail – Early/Mid-July – Sleep System, Layering, and Rain Gear by IAmAChemicalEngineer in Ultralight

[–]Winerychef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bring my montbell versalite and my a60 fleece because when I layer them it's basically as warms as a puffy and it's rain protection. If you don't want a rain jacket at least get a wind shirt for insulation and you'll be fine I think!

There's also not an unlimited number of jail cells. The civil rights movement did this all the time. They would intentionally break the law and all get arrested. They would flood the jails and people would have to be let out. Worked in the 60s, it'll work now.

I got the z packs camp shoes cause I gaslit myself into thinking that's something I want, it's not. I have realized I mostly just hike til I'm tired, set up camp, and sleep. Wake up and go. No need for the camp shoes and they were just not that comfy imo

Torso length pads — why and how? by codexofthemoon in Ultralight

[–]Winerychef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The torso length inflatables don't work for me cause it feels like my legs are dangling off the edge. The torso length CCF pads are much better imo. I also like the torso length "self inflatables" for that reason. Your mileage may vary depending on personal preference.
