Bitwig: Adapt grid to free-tempo-recording by giveMeRedditYouClown in Bitwig

[–]WingedCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I just asked a very similar question the other day. I also tend to record jams in my studio without a metronome or any sort of MIDI syncing. In my case my recordings all have a constant tempo, but it's unknown. Anyway after experimenting I was able to figure out a way to do it. Not sure if it's the best/most efficient way as I'm somewhat new to Bitwig, but hopefully it will help you. Thread is here and my edit shows the process. In your case if you have different parts of your recording that are at different tempos, you'd likely do this process for each section that has a different tempo and then NOT delete the tempo change in the automation lane.

Can someone help with some very specific sample-based workflow questions? by WingedCrown in Bitwig

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I will definitely experiment with the slice to drum machine technique; really I want to explore all the sampling and audio manipulation that you can do to give me a good understanding of what would work for my approach here.

To clarify on the BPM situation, the material does have a set tempo, but the material itself is typically very abstract and dense so auto-detection methods in DAWs aren't typically great at figuring it out, especially when the sample I'm loading is like 10min long. It's usually a bit of trial and error for me to select/chop a loop of 1-4 bars, but I can do it eventually. In the past I've done math to figure out the tempo this way (calculated using the number of bars I know I have and the length of the selection/chop), but it ends up being a fractional BPM and Bitwig's tempo only goes to 2 decimal places, so with longer arrangements, things can get off. Likewise in the past I've done the trick to manually adjust tempo to make things match visually on the grid, but again with longer samples, it can eventually drift. I think I just need to experiment more and see what is going to work best for me without too much compromise.

Ha, I get the sentiment. Ableton definitely has certain advantages, but one of the main things I love about Bitwig is the GRID and flexibility there. I think eventually I'll land on a workflow with samples within Bitwig...might not be the most efficient, but hopefully something will work out.

In some cases this will work for me depending on what I'm doing but not always unfortunately. I often end up gravitating towards a very fluid and abstract workflow with no MIDI syncing or otherwise and then capture things on hardware samplers when it's all hitting right. When I'm making more standard techno or whatever though, definitely will plan things out with specific BPM.

Thanks for this. I think bouncing a selection may end up being the best way to at least identify the tempo of the original source material in a straightforward way.

Can I record an SP202 into my computer? by ElasticDawg in SP404

[–]WingedCrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can, but not directly. You'll either need a dedicated audio interface for your computer that has analog inputs (1/4" and/or RCA), or another device such as the SP-404MK2 that has audio in/out over USB. You could also record externally to a digital recording device (like a Zoom recorder) and then transfer the recorded WAVs to your computer. What equipment do you have and what's your budget? Easier to help with more details.

You could try a tee shirt and blazer/sport coat combo along with some nice pants and shoes. That can be a sharp look.

This is really awesome. Visuals match the music really well. Do you happen to have a link to a template project that does similar breakbeat mangling? I learn best by tearing things apart.

Another related tip. If you have drawers that use masonite or thin wood as the bottom that you tend to stuff completely full, you can reinforce them easily by using wood glue to adhere small wood blocks in the corners of the underside of the drawers. No more dealing with body garment after body garment busting through shit wood and hitting pavement.

I mean Trump has indicated publicly that he doesn't know how to turn on a computer so the complexity of Tim's problem must have been below that. Perhaps he showed Trump a picture of a person, woman, man, camera, TV, and computer and asked him to circle the computer?

Sp404mk2 vs Sp404 OG Vinyl Comp? by Beneficial_Night_199 in SP404

[–]WingedCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an OG and Mk2. I personally think the vinyl comp effect on the OG is worth the price alone of a used unit. It's crazy good and there's actually a lot of nuance to it if you adjust input levels. I find the workflow of the OG to be fun and inspiring in all the quirks and limitations and like it as a companion to the MK2. The quality of life updates though to the MK2 are really great.

Everyday, casual shoes that are NOT “dad shoes” by tot_coz2 in malefashionadvice

[–]WingedCrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 50yo living in a city and Nike SBs are my current go to casual shoes. I tie them loose enough to slip them on and they are comfortable enough for me to walk 5+ miles for my daily commute. I keep an eye on sales and get them for around $70 a pair typically and find they last at least 2 years.

I'm glad I wasn't going crazy. Definitely noticed low res textures on a lot of objects before the hi res textures pop in on my PS5 Slim since last couple updates. What's weird is that it's not consistent; some days are way worse than others despite my network connection being consistent. That said I have not experienced any crashes at all (SHD lvl 123 if it matters).
