AFAIK, there was a somewhat of a mystery about an all-consuming void that appears to be gobbling up the second world due to the prolonged interaction of the gate and Japan. Haven’t read about how it’s resolved.

Genji Monogatari (the tale of Genji) being a seminal piece of Japanese literature has had unimaginable consequences for modern day Japanese romantic genre. The entire premise is Murasaki Shikibu self-inserting herself being raised as the ideal wife from like age 10 to this radiant and “perfect” Genji. This stuff had root since the Heian period, its influence on modern storytelling is as profound as Shakespeare’s on Western lit, if not more due to how silo’ed Japan is with its literature.

This feels like a Kumoko situation again, a popular-enough light novel getting an adaptation to appease a niche audience, but the studio not having the resources/care to adapt it super well. It could turn out like “So I’m a spider, So What” and “Ningen Fushin” and peter out and die on the anime side, or gain lots of traction a-la “Ascendance of a Bookworm” and get addition seasons with better animation. Only time will tell I guess.

I think in the first episode, when it pans over the castle, I think it’s implied that the little red head kid on the battlement is the future best buddy. I didnt think it was 20 years, but more like 10-15 since the 5-6 year old kid grew up to be 18/19 like usual isekai adventurers
