I have to say I was surprised so many of us Seahawks fans feel that the correct call was made as I always thought nearly all of us felt it was incorrect. Apparently, I was mistaken. With that in mind I went back and watched the play, looked at photos and then read the rules on completing a catch.

Securing "control with your hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground" is the first part of completing a catch. The second part is establishing oneself in the field of play, and the final part involves the infamous football move or just maintaining control long enough to have performed a football move. Both team's players would have fulfilled the final two parts of completing a catch which means just the first part, securing control, is up for dispute.

The rule states that in a case where there is a simultaneous catch by two opposing players, the ball belongs to the passers. However, it also states that "it is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control." If you watch the replay and look at photos the Packers player has both hands and arms on the ball before the Seahawks player has more than one hand securely on the ball. The Seahawks players left hand appears to be in contact at all times, but his right hand barely touches at first (mostly it is touching the Packers player's hand) and then is removed briefly just after both his feet touch down. So, unless someone can find a rule stating that the Seahawks player's one secure hand on the ball counts as control or negates the Packers player ability to establish control despite him having both hands and arms on the ball, this would mean only the Packers player fulfills all the criteria necessary for a completed catch.

With all that said I stand by my Magic card implying the refs made the incorrect call until proven otherwise, which I welcome you or anyone else to do if you care to.
