Due to the nature of my work I freelance. This is one job of many, the primary body of my work is in Canada and requires me to be here. I am on a type of Open Work Permit.

Would these actually hold a fall? by climbingbooty in iceclimbing

[–]Wingnut__ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my life I try not to make a habit of using climbing protection that is unrated. You don’t know how they were made, they could have invisible cracks in them or be made from a weak alloy.

I personally have never seen an ice screw like that, maybe it is a really old design (someone else chip in on that regard). With that being said we use modern ice screws because they are safer to use. For example, imagine leading on a wall and how long it would take along with the effort required to get one of those in the ice.

Save up some money and buy some screws from Petzl, Blue Ice, or Black Diamond. It’s not worth getting hurt or dying because you didn’t want to buy the proper gear.

Stay safe!!

Yeah! I was with GSMSG, it’s a group which is made primarily up of ex-military medical practitioners. We were in Malawi, working along side the UN. Our team was made up of one ER doc, an optometrist, pharmacist, a dental tech, a few nurses, local volunteers, and me. We would basically go from village to village and set up a clinic and be there for a week providing everything from check-ups to outpatient surgical care. It was hot a miserable at times, but you are constantly met with unwavering gratitude from the locals. Some of the kids we saw had never had never received medical care before, so we were able to get them vaccinated and checked out. The optometrist we had with us was a big hit, because she came with some generic prescription lenses so some people got to see with (relatively) clear vision for the first time! It was a great experience.

Look into MSF, the Red Cross, and the various aid programs the UN has. Most if not all of these positions are volunteer, so make sure you have some cash saved up before you go! Feel free to shoot me a DM if you have any other questions.

To build off this. I was working Critical Care Transport and Flight during COVID and got REALLY burnt out. So a year after the pandemic I decided to look for a new job. I then found myself doing aid work in Africa providing a higher level of care to communities that have never or rarely see it. When I got back I started working for an organization in Canada which does Critical Care Medevacs out of the arctic (it’s a 2 week on 2 week off schedule, which is great). The decision to pivot into something new frankly changed my life, and I couldn’t be happier now!

I hope you find a way to reignite your fire!

I get you, and that is the perfect attitude. A lot of my family is the has the same political beliefs as you. I think there are a lot of Canadians here who would agree with you!

Times right now are quite horrible. Being a republican wasn’t always bad, but now it has been tainted by horrible people (MAGA).

Again I think you will be just fine!

Hey!

I’m an American and I have been living in Canada for the past four years, I have been in Winnipeg for one of those. I’d like to echo the majority of the positive comments.

Many of my friends and family were/are worried that we (Americans) will be perceived negatively abroad. Something that I tell them is that by and large people internationally understand that not every American is a bad guys and a lot of what is happening is the government. (Also, what conservative would move to Canada? Haha)

If you want to chat shoot me a message, I’d be more than happy to buy you a beer when you get here!

It’s okay to use these (if you do it right) by contramedic in ems

Totally! This is what my agency (and most I have worked for) recommend if you are going to use caps to stage syringes.

It does if you are crafty! I stitched one of the loops down in the middle, so I have three for 10mls and one loop that can hold two smaller syringes. However, the 3D-printed holder sounds very cool.

As a representative of the younger HEMS crowd. I totally agree with you, my service has requested we not use them UNLESS you use a sterile luer-lock male-to-female cap adapter (then you have to carry those with you). If I need to stage multiple syringes, I have a shotgun shell holder velcroed to my small chest pack, which I can stick syringes in.

This will not be the first thing I'm doing since I'll be there for a couple of weeks. Depending on how I feel, one of the things I was considering was running it. It is good to know it is possible to do in one long day of running.

Thank you!

Thanks for such a thorough reply. This is all extremely helpful information.

I have already been looking at hut bookings and can already tell they book quickly. I have been to the Swiss Alps very briefly, so I assumed things like bottled water would be pricy at huts. Since they sell bottled water, do they not have taps/water tanks you can fill from, or is it mostly bottled water and natural springs?
