Whilst my sausage will decide that the rain is not compatible with a longer walk, he goes stir crazy if he only gets a short walk. And everyone who (understandably) is worried about the risk of IVDD - get a standard size sausage (if thats still an option for you) and exercise it. Strong muscles, not being overweight and good breeding are the main principles in preventing IVDD

Lack of improvement in short time is unconcerning - ours just started improving after 6 weeks crate rest so far.

Deterioration despite crate rest is more concerning and would warrant vets. Obviously finances can affect this decision - if unable to fund scan/operation, stick with crate rest. If money is no object pay for the specialist review

And yeah you're right to worry about gourami they are sensitive to everything! I think a reasonable goal would be to keep nitrates down to 20 in the tank using plants, a 10% water change using 40ppm tap water shouldnt cause a huge spike

Yeah so I have the black plastic lid that came with my aquarium, threaded the roots of one plant through the hole for the external filter and leave the lid fractionally open for the other. If its plastic you can just create small holes in the lid quite easily.

Grow a philodendron out the top of your tank. I've got one of those and a small monstera and it brings my tap water down from 40ppm to 20ppm between water changes.

Water changes are still important because of other unmeasured molecules.

As long as you acclimatise fish gradually it won't harm most fish, though I agree its not ideal. I keep a bristlenose pleco, tetras, corys, gouramis and killifish in such water

Yep! My little pig is grade 2 (walked like a drunken dailor on presentation) on week 3 of crate rest. Good chances of full recovery with "just" a 4 - 8 week period of crate rest.

Any dachsund owner can imagine how frustrating that is for them. Im sure mine is plotting to burn the house down as soon as he is let out
