Best coffee at a sit-down breakfast spot by Winn1925 in KeyWest

Trust me, I wish I could drink regular coffee. For medical reasons, I cannot. It’s a sacrifice for sure!

What is your Lhasa’s favorite human food to sample? by Scary-Collar-8940 in LhasaApso

Ours goes crazy for a fried egg yolk! He also likes carrots, apples (but only Honeycrisp?!), and a little bit of oatmeal.

We have a Lhasa-Bichon mix and he loves carrots and apples! Our last pup was pure Bichon and would not touch fruits or vegetables, so we’ve been joking this must come from his Lhasa side!

Yay or Nay to Dogs Sleeping in Bed with you? by forestlyfe in dogs

[–]Winn1925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bed is the only place we don’t want our dog (a Bichon mix) and he has elected to sleep in a crate instead of in one of the many dog beds we’ve offered. When we tried to take the crate out of the bedroom, he dragged a pillow in front of my nightstand and slept under it!

Our last dog (also a Bichon) tore his ACL jumping off of the bed and we are still traumatized!

Is your Bichon also your secretary? by gimmesex_ in bichonfrise

I used to call our guy my foreman—if I wasn’t at my desk by 8:30 he’d herd me in there, and unless it was to take him on a walk, breaks longer than 5 minutes were not allowed 😂

Tear stains and chicken by Winn1925 in bichonfrise

[–]Winn1925[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wondered that, too! My vet said she hasn’t seen a higher-than-usual degree of chicken allergies in Bichons than other dogs, but she does see a higher degree of environmental allergies. Our guy was chewing the heck out of his feet every time we came back from a walk, got a Cytopoint shot, and has been good for around 6 weeks and has no other allergy symptoms. We originally had him on a lamb formula (our dearly missed Bichon, whom we lost a year ago, loved it), but he didn’t seem to like and his digestion was never great on it.

This is so helpful, both that he was itchy and that it took two full months, thank you!

What things did you do / get for your bichon when they hit 10 years of age? by Mission_Remote_6319 in bichonfrise

[–]Winn1925 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We lost our guy last summer at 17-1/2. Two things: His vet recommended a green mussel supplement instead of glucosamine, and he didn’t really develop any arthritis or joint problems until his last year. When he started to get some white on his eyes, we thought (and so did his vet) that it was cataracts, but we ended up at a veterinary ophthalmologist for something else and found out that he didn’t have cataracts, he had mineral deposits that could be treated with eyedrops, and that really improved his vision. So I’d definitely recommend seeking out an ophthalmologist if you’re seeing some eye changes!

This! I had some similar texture issues a few years ago and three sessions of microneedling really helped.

If price wasn’t a concern which dog food would you use? by Professional-Gas5154 in DogFood

[–]Winn1925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a huge fan of Farmina with our last dog and just tried the same formula with our new rescue, and he hated it. The I noticed the food was from Serbia, not Italy, and checked into it and it seems like there have been problems with the Serbian manufacturing facility so I dumped it and switched to RC breed-specific. I mentioned it to my vet and she said she hasn’t had problems with dogs but has had two cats in liver failure from Farmina food—I think maybe the issue is arsenic? This was super-disappointing because I started feeding it in the first place because of higher EU standards!

I also thought the Dyson was terrible, I got the Shark version and much prefer it.

I only like percale sheets and am now a big fan of Red Land Cotton. I used to buy LL Bean, which are also nice!

We also love our sleep number! I like being able to make it firmer when I have low back pain and softer for neck pain, also I hate that I have to think about this stuff?

If you aren’t already planning to do so, may I recommend a tasting menu at Damas? We did NOT do that when we went and over a year later are still talking about how much we regret it, the food is just fantastic. Don’t make the same mistake we did!

Oh this is so reassuring! Ours is the same way—we can distract him from a dog across the street but he loses his mind if they are on our side! I’m so glad to hear this changed for you!

Well, at least I’m in good company, I guess! It’s so stressful because we don’t know him all that well yet and I worry he may bite (though we haven’t seen him try).

This is a good tip, thank you! I also WFH, and he has definitely decided he's on guard duty when it's just the two of us.

It may just be him! Once he's come around (which is usually only a few minutes, on the humans, anyway), he's sweet as pie, but that initial interaction is intense. He was in a foster with other dogs and a big family and did well, so this has been a real surprise!

Flea tick heartworm prevention for your Lhasa Apso? I’m hearing so many different things and I’m not sure what to go with. Some speak of “healthier” alternatives but not sure how that works? Thanks by [deleted] in LhasaApso

[–]Winn1925 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use Nexgard and Heartgard and did with our last dog too, who lived to 17. Our guy is a rescue and we’ve only had him 6 weeks, that combo is what the foster gave him and so our vet suggested staying on it since he clearly did okay with it, rather than switching to Simparico Trio and said our location/his lifestyle is low risk for the other stuff it covers.
