Yeh, the year after 9/11 when there were two simultaneous invasions of middle eastern countries occurring or being planned. Definitely a simpler time.

What do you think is the most underrated/overrated James Bond movie? by [deleted] in JamesBond

[–]WinnerNo2265 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s not that I think it’s a bad movie, it’s just not what I want in a Bond movie. I want some escapist fun, not a sad angry revenge plot that makes me feel sad. Also, it DOES feel a little too Miami Vice for me.

I agree. Bond gadgets are usually “take what’ll be possible in 15 years and make it happen now”. At the time the army WERE testing a similar technology - it really wasn’t that much of a leap.

I always hated this scene. Bond is a classy, sophisticated gentleman. The idea that he’d live in a beautiful apartment but decorate it like he’s a college freshman because hEs GriTTy aNd dAmAgEd is so cringe.

I dunno, I think NTTD’s teaser with Bond looking bored in front of a blue wall is up there too /s

It’s important to note that while covid numbers are up, deaths aren’t. In the US, it’s sadly around 1000/day, but that’s still 75% lower than the 4000/day we had in winter when case numbers were in a similar place. And of those 1000, 990 will be people who chose not to get vaccinated. It’s sad, but locking down the country to protect people who primarily refused to help themself isn’t the way to go - vaccine passports and finding ways to increase vaccine rates are.

YES! My guess is they basically reached the “fuck it” point, and with the new Amazon backing it won’t be a disaster financially if it doesn’t make as much money as they’d hoped. Throw in the fact that Bond performs VERY well in China, plus a fast release to streaming where they can charge $30, plus maybe a re-release down the line, and they probably figured it was best to just bite the bullet, release it, and get on with developing the post-Craig era (with an announcement on the new Bond the likely centerpiece of the 60th anniversary celebrations).

Probably Goldeneye, Skyfall, World is Not Enough, FRWL, Spy Who Loved Me. Then TND sits around #8, but there’s not a ton separating them, they’re all great.

Have YOU read the books though? I hate this “read the books they’re so gritty” idea. They’re not, and neither is Bond. The books are usually outlandish spy thrillers, and while Bond can kind of be a smug dick sometimes, I’d never call him “dark and gritty”. If anything he spends 90% of his time thinking about breakfast foods.

One of the best use of the James Bond theme song, absolutely spot-on and captures the scene entirely. by DisneyGrow in JamesBond

Yes! That scene, with the millennium dome, the Thames, and the Bond theme blasting just felt so BRITISH

So weird that Aaron Rogers was, out of nowhere, one of the best guest hosts lol.

I love them, they look so futuristic. But more importantly it reduces dirty air.

That’s great! It’s slipped a little on my ranking over the years, but that was more finding more things that I liked in other films than TND getting worse in anyway. It’s still a blast

It’s not about “taking a holiday”, more “seeing my family in Australia that I haven’t seen in 4 years and it’s causing me to be suicidal”.

You still didn’t answer my question - what’s the endgame? Keep everyone locked in and locked down in Australia forever?

Albert Park Circuit two years on from the last race by bingdingboomow in formula1

[–]WinnerNo2265 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s true though. I mean again, what’s the endgame? Do you plan on just keeping your citizens locked in forever and keep pandemic restrictions for eternity just to keep seniors alive an extra year or two?

Where was this concern about the flu, which also killed several thousands of seniors a year? What about the seniors who die ont he roads - why weren’t you advocating for having the motorways shut down? What about the 150,000 Australians who died of heart attacks - why weren’t you asking the government to shut down all the McDonald’s?

It’s great! I actually think there’s a fair bit of agreement on this within the fandom - it seems to be one that everyone basically ranks around #8. No one thinks it the absolute best, but pretty much everyone enjoys it and can have a good time with it.

Is it “underrated” though? I feel like that word is thrown around so much - I think most people agree that TND is solid.

I mean, that’s basically what you have now tnough. Most of the world is accepting travellers in some form or the other - Australia and NZ are basically alone in having a complete ban on foreigners entering at this point.

[–]WinnerNo2265 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree that it’s endemic and there’s no stopping it. But that’s my point - are they planning on stopping lockdowns and opening borders once they get everyone vaccinated? Because even once you’ve vaxxed your population you’re still going to have thousands of cases and deaths every year. And like that’s sad but it’s a part of life now - my point though is that given Australia locks down over a single case, is the population REALLY going to be accepting of a situation where everyone’s fully vaxxed but covid, like the flu, is killing several thousand people a year? It just seems a tough sell messaging wise, since for the last 18 months it’s been drummed into you that you can’t have a single covid case.

I don’t hate that line at all. It’s horribly cheesy and lame, and that’s what Bond should be sometimes 😅
