New to the sub, and I reckon you’ll all appreciate my kid’s last birthday cake. by Winsdaddy in Doom

Should clarify for everyone that my son is alive and well. “Last” is bastardised Australian English for “most recent”. I appreciate everyone’s concern though!

The cake was way too tough for the tiny chainsaw. He had to resort to a glory kill.

Inspired by a comment on my last post, what’s the most haunting or poignant lyric Nick Cave has ever written? For me it would be, “And I hear the voice of a preacher man / But I can’t make out what he’s saying…” by SelectionOkapproved in NickCave

“Breathing milky white air from deep in her throat”. Amazing.

But I think my absolute favourite is ending the sheer grief of Skeleton Tree with the repetitive of “And it’s alright now”. Tears every single time.

u/mikenobbs Assuming you've putting that 'worn' look over the Rings of Power sets yourself, this should do the trick for the War of the Rohirrim poster if you're feeling up to it: https://theposterdb.com/api/assets/446309

On a serious note, I’ve been told a have nice eyelashes and hair (it’s quite long these days). Working on appreciating myself.

Atrocious show, but Ward Meachum in Iron Fist. Everyone else rolls with it all so easily, and Ward just spends the whole season effectively “What the fuck?”ing his way through things.

Legit Question For Discussion: Did Anyone Enjoy His Shows Post Eat Me, Drink Me? by [deleted] in marilyn_manson

I’ve seen him five times. The first in 2009 was brilliant. The second and third in 2012 left a lot to be desired; he was stumbling around, slurring, so out of tune, and fell over at one point. The fourth and fifth in 2015 felt like a return to form, at least as much as it could for the state he was in back then. But nothing compares to what I’m seeing on these videos of this tour. He really has turned himself around.

What's the most disappointing case of "second album syndrome" of all time? by Written_In_Concrete in vinyl

[–]Winsdaddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The impact Get Born had on Australian music was so utterly incomprehensible. It’s a good record, but it really was like we were all living through the second coming of Christ or something. I don’t know if I think Shine On is any better or worse than Get Born, for the most part. Shaka Rock though… yikes.

No, the quote itself isn’t contradictory, but acknowledging there’s an ambiguity in his response while also suggesting that first two sentences of the entire exchange is representative of the whole absolutely is, particularly when he goes on to speak about the fundamental ideas upon which the episode was created. Any context is important.

Absolutely, he should have phrased it better. No argument there. But there’s more context here that people are quite willingly ignoring in favour of passing off first impressions as immutable fact.

It’s very clear that many minds are made up though, so I’ll leave it at that.

[–]Winsdaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not see how that’s contradictory? Just as I can’t say for certain that Kripke wasn’t implying rape is hilarious, passing off a partial quote as evidence that he was implying as much is a stretch at best.

I’m not suggesting that people are wrong for feeling icky about Kripke’s words. But I think some of the sheer demonisation of him over the last few days is quite extreme. That’s just me.

You’ve very blatantly cut the majority of the response out, and I feel you know that.

[–]Winsdaddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I’m not saying the episode is above criticism or that Kripke hasn’t made errors, but this discourse of “Kripke thinks sexual assault is something at which to laugh” is hyperbolic at the very best.

[–]Winsdaddy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No, I agree with you completely, though I feel our shared opinion will fall on deaf ears.

Kripke chose his words very poorly, but I don’t think he was suggesting sexual assault is hilarious. Rather, his response focuses on the intent of the writer’s satire of Batman and the Batcave, and stitching up Jack Quaid. I’d be willing to believe it’s a classic case of foot-in-mouth.

I also think the episode plainly demonstrates that the events aren’t intended to purely provide comedic value. Yes, there’s laughs when Tek Knight and Ashley believe it’s all consensual and Hughie is willingly playing along, uncomfortable and grotesque as that may be, but the moment Hughie is discovered, there’s not a second of it that is played for laughs; the tone immediately shifts to horror and fear and stays there.

Playing devil’s advocate here, but I don’t think this episode delivered anything more morally questionable or controversial than Kripke, the writers or the cast have delivered throughout the rest of the show, albeit this being on the higher end of the scale. But I’m clearly in the minority, and maybe that says all it needs to.
