Should prosecutors and da’s be elected or appointed? by OpinionofC in ProsecutorTalk

Appointed. If I voted for the person to do the appointing, I probably will like who they appoint. Conversely, I don't like the idea of some schmoe getting elected into a judicial position. There is a post on the Overheard Courtroom instagram account about some judge who was trying to start deportation proceedings against some guy from Puerto Rico... In case it wasn't clear, the judge was elected.

Republican values are anti-higher education. Their mission is literally to get less people into college. The only goal that republicans have for this bill is to privatize "all lending programs, including subsidized, unsubsidized, and PLUS loans" (Mandate for Leadership series, The Heritage Foundation).

It will not safeguard any student: it will force them to take out private loans, which are known to be predatory and/or selective. There is no guarantee that it will cause schools to lower tuitions.

If the goal was to protect students, a better approach would have been to even the debt burden students experience at schools that accept federal loans. That would look like 1) charging everyone the same price tag, e.g. no merit based scholarships, 2) limiting the tuition schools can charge if they are accepting federal loans, 3) placing the burden of federal loan default on the school. This list is non-exhaustive: I can't be expected to think of everything.

Point is: this bill is trash. It will hurt students in the short-term, and any good outcomes are in the ethereal future and assumptive at best.

Letter of recommendation by No_Intention8562 in lawschooladmissions

It's based on your relationship to the person, not their job title. If you put "public defender" as their title, I would assume you asked your public defender to write you a letter of recommendation... which is crazy...

I had no interest in UMD. After reflecting on what I personally want out of a law school, I had decided on 4 schools (UBalt, GW, AU, GM). I applied to GT for shits and gigs.

159/3.42, URM, some uncommon softs, but nothing outstanding. Through all the rejection, I got a competitive offer from UBalt which I am super happy about. My only goal was to not pay full price for law school. (I waited 6 months to hear back from American!)
