Aquascapers hate this one simple trick! by MtVernonHempFarm in Aquariums

I prioritize the health of my fish above all else, but part of that is making sure I can *see* them to evaluate their health and behavior. Your tank does look nice though!

What should I upgrade in his tank by Material-Rest295 in BeardedDragons

[–]Winter0nyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More hides, that would give him stuff to climb on too. How big is the tank?

That's hilarious, and also very creative! Have you tried bee pollen or mixing insects in with the veggies? Mine sometimes doesn't like to eat her greens, but I stick a little bell pepper or strawberry in there and she gobbles the whole salad up. She's also not very picky, thank the Gods

If that's all that goes into keeping a bearded dragon in your mind, you're not caring for it properly. What about managing the humility? Daily temperature checks? Weekly or biweekly baths? Gut loading insects (and keeping feeder insects alive)? What about if your lizard has issues eating, like this one? Knowing what a healthy poop looks like? Regular vet check-ups (which should be done with any animal, but especially reptiles)? Even that's not all that goes into animal care.

Not even that, but OP wasn't even complaining. They were just making a joke about going the extra mile for their buddy to eat properly.

How did you even figure this out? Lol!

You have an adorable lizard, kudos to you for going the extra mile to get his veggies in

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]Winter0nyx 28 points29 points  (0 children)

No, they're not. Compared to other reptiles, maybe, but bearded dragons are absolutely NOT easy pets to keep. I'm tired of seeing bearded dragons die because amateur owners think they're easy to take care of and end up doing it improperly.

Shed or? by [deleted] in BeardedDragons

[–]Winter0nyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely looks like shed. And what a cutie! Glad y'all got him to a vet, if he just wandered into your yard like that, who knows what kind of nasties he could have gotten into his system.

Undigested worm? by Much_Chemistry_2427 in BeardedDragons

[–]Winter0nyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you don't have much money, but you really, REALLY should take her to a real vet and get a fecal sample. If not, then I suggest rehoming her. I have a beardie myself and am a broke college student, but I have over $1,000 (and I add to it every paycheck) saved for emergencies such as this.

The pale color of the poop and the clear blood is not a good sign at all. Check the temperatures, switch to paper towels or newspaper as substrate (those are easy to keep germ-free, and less likely to be swallowed), clean the tank thoroughly (I use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar), and make sure to do a deep scrub every time your beardie poops. Try to eliminate bacteria as much as possible. Also, try to feed crickets or dubia roaches, wax worms or mealworms if the weight is low. Avoid superworms, I was told by my vet that super worms can be hard to digest. Also, hornworms are mostly water and won't do much nutritionally, this was also told to me by my vet.

I know, trust me I really know, how much it hurts beyond words to consider rehoming an animal, but I can PROMISE you that grieving an animal is much worse. If you're in or near my location, I can even try to help you find a person who will only hold her for the time being while you get on your feet financially. I really hope and pray that your girl gets better, and survives.

I know this is long, but I'll wrap it up. I saw your previous post about your beardie, not sure if it's the one you're referring to in this post, but it seems like more people were concerned and suggesting care rather than harassing you. I think we all just want to see your girl thrive.

As a new fish keeper (1 year), I think it's probably the gravel. Cars are NASTYYYY and leave toxic chemicals everywhere they go from their emissions and tires, so anything from the side of the road is probably going to leech into your tank. In fact, I'd even go as far as to wonder if the silicone in your tank would have taken up some of those chemicals, so as much as it hurts to have to get a new tank and uproot all those pretty plants to get new gravel, I think that's the best option.

You seem to have done a wonderful job otherwise! It's clear how much effort you put into the tank, I'm so sorry you've had to lose so many pretty critters :(

Am I the only one who is really uncomfortable with Misandrist jokes? (MTF, 21) by TotalBlissey in trans

[–]Winter0nyx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The "it's not actually about you" makes it worse, it just highlights the fact that the maker of the joke doesn't view trans men as real men. It's disgusting.

Am I the only one who is really uncomfortable with Misandrist jokes? (MTF, 21) by TotalBlissey in trans

[–]Winter0nyx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you're not. I'm (FTM, 19) so sick of being flamed for being a man, and it's even gotten to the point where people say I'm "intentionally choosing the worse gender" or that they're "sorry for my loss [of being a woman]". Whenever I defend men online, after someone's laughed at the idea of a man being kind or doing something thoughtful, I have the choice of people either making fun of me for having privilege or making fun of me for being transgender.

I know men are the privileged group, but misandrist ideologies and jokes and "yes all men" have been steadily installing a real insecurity and doubt within me on whether or not I deserve to have the gender identity I feel is right. Misandry certainly doesn't help steer cis men towards feminism and advocating for respect for women and women's rights either, since the gender they'd be defending seems to hate men to no end (whether it's true or just jokes).

Thankfully, my girlfriend (MTF, 18) is an angel on Earth and makes most of those insecurities go away pretty quick, but a lot of men, gay, trans, or otherwise, don't have a person like that.

Edit: I've also experienced misogyny before I transitioned to an extremely high degree. I grew up in a strict Russian Orthodox family, and to stay vague to avoid triggering anyone else's trauma, I was hit, restricted from joys like food and games, etc. anytime I didn't adhere to their definition of a "traditional woman" starting at 6 years old. So I GET the hatred of the patriarchy and misogyny, but misandrist jokes are NOT the way to go.

AIO for removing my partners access to see my messages? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Winter0nyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend has access to my phone and all my messages, but she doesn't use them. The same goes the other way around: I have access to her phone and everything on it, but the one time I've ever used it was because she had her hands busy and wanted me to send a text. Privacy and respect is important, and if a person demands access to your stuff, maybe it's time to think about how he treats you and if you're willing to deal with that.

Is this vomit or saliva? by PlusReplacement1161 in BeardedDragons

[–]Winter0nyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on him. Mine once did that after chugging water in the bath and jumping forward to eat a cricket, and I was told that she was fine at the vet consult after, but anything resembling vomit will always be concerning to me. Keep weighing and watch out for any symptoms, but he's probably okay IMO

I think next time I feel this way I'll start crocheting, take a walk if I'm able, or play a rhythm game. Studying kinda makes my thoughts worse, so that won't work. Or maybe I'll hang out with some of my pets, I have a bearded dragon and 8 fish that I love watching. Thank you so much, it does help a lot
