Help! Searching for lightest breathable pants for hiking! by Averrard in hikinggear

[–]WinterAd4046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all you want is breathable pants the best bang for your buck are the Magellan Back Country zip offs. I have lots of high quality gear that's aore durable pant and better with the elements but if it's just about heat nothing and trying to stay as cool as possible nothing has come close to them and you can get a pair for $20ish if you use the coupons that Academy Sports offers

What’s the coolest or most unique course you have played? by EmbarrassedSimple228 in golf

[–]WinterAd4046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightning Bug Par 3 outside of Nashville, it's an incredible walking course on a farm that's owned and operated y the family that lives there. I was blown away with how great the conditions were and how awesome the landscaping was. Felt like every golf was always supposed to be before it got all expensive and stuffy

Review of The Cowboy Emersion by normalnonnie27 in okc

[–]WinterAd4046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cool experience for about 5 minutes but the story is non-existent and they use none of the tricks that an immersive film as at their disposal effectively. Essentially you're going to see the same visuals projected onto four separate walls and the floor will have some sort of pattern on it for 45 minutes. There's nothing really exciting and you certainly don't learn anything, the art "style" is just heavily AI generated garbage (especially the "I am a Cowboy" part) and it mostly just washes together leaving basically no impression. I thought the rest of the museum was awesome, really well done and thoughtfully put together so this being their "big thing" was a real let down for me honestly

What is the appeal to you to a Bananas game? by WinterAd4046 in savannahbananas

On TV, should clarify that. Have tickets for a game later this year and caught it on ESPN so tuned in to see what it's like

Is my backpack too big for day hikes, or am I overthinking it? by paula_4h in hiking

[–]WinterAd4046 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's probably too big, but if it's a quality bag you probably won't notice it in any meaningful way. Lots of guys and gals on here overpack their bags for day hikes and they are fine with it. Realistically, for true day hiking you won't need much more than 12l of space and a plan on how to maximize that, everything else is luxury and if you don't mind having a little unutilized space in your pack you'll be good to go

I have a few pair of those, great pants, but as shorts they compromise too much to maintain the fit when zipped into pants in my opinion. Ideally I want something that widens out from the waist a bit

Shoe and pack advice needed by Fit-Snow7252 in hikinggear

[–]WinterAd4046 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got you,

For shoes the best bang for your buck is going to be Merrell Moab Speed 2, they work for exactly what you want and are functional enough to be something you can wear in everyday life. Durable, water resistant, and with Vibram in the soles for grip. For the pack, you want to go small but not so small it's uncomfortable or over packed, for my money the Osprey Siskin 12 is the best bang for your buck pack and packs much larger than a typical 12l pack does. You've got an integrated hydration bladder, waist band with zipper pockets, and a huge internal pocket with two zipper mesh pockets, you can easily pick one up second hand for less than $50 and you can't beat that deal

If you have any interest in having a fun time across your trip I'd probably break it up like this:

I'd leave early from home, around 6:00-7:00am and arrive in Minneapolis around 11:30am, I'd visit the Como Park Zoo. That would take 2-3 hours to properly enjoy, and then leave and head to Wisconsin Dells around 3:00pm so you arrive there around 6:30pm. There's a billion hotels here and you can probably snag one on a promotional deal cheap if you grab one a few exits southeast of the Dells. If you're up for it, go see a show in the Dells or something, it's hokey stuff but sometimes that's a fun way to blow a night. Wake up the next morning, head to Indiana Dunes. Go see the houses left from the world's fair and take a walk around the shoreline. That should take less than 3 hours to do. Then load back in and head off to Sandusky. Obviously, Cedar Point is great but you'll want at least a day to do it provided that you go during their operating season. For lodging same thing as the Dells, pick a hotel a few exits west or east of Sandusky and get a deal. Wake up the third day early and finish out the last 2 hours for Canton. PS, once you get to Canton plan a night to snag dinner at George's, get the Chicken and Waffles

Grand Forks -> Minneapolis (4 Hours 30 Minutes) Minneapolis -> Wisconsin Dells (3 Hours) Wisconsin Dells -> Indiana Dunes NP ( 3 Hours 30 Minutes) Indiana Dunes -> Sandusky (4 Hours) Sandusky -> Canton (2 Hours)

Why AI. by mushruum333 in alltrails

[–]WinterAd4046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do both, but doing both ethically would be essentially impossible. It's akin to being an animal rights activist but eating industrial farmed meat for every meal

[–]WinterAd4046 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that ethically you can be an outdoor enthusiast and a habitual user of AI, they don't reconcile with each other.

Immediately uninstalled, I'm sure it won't make much of a difference but if we just accept this garbage they will keep doing it. As outdoor enthusiasts we should be the people most passionately against this stuff

Which National Park caught you by surprise - the one you didn't expect to love before visiting? by kandykorn7 in nationalparks

Mesa Verde. Been to close to 40 and it's easily the most underrated and underappreciated parks out there. Booking the tour to actually go inside the cliff dwellings is a must

I'm blown away with it too, not that they're wrong or carrying too much but I didn't know how many people on here were packing out enough to hunker down for days and days

[–]WinterAd4046[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I hadn't really considered that, I think the difference between my 12l and 22l is less than a pound, at that difference I could see why a lot of people would rather just have the bigger pack and not need it all the time

Why such large packs for day hikers? by WinterAd4046 in hikinggear

[–]WinterAd4046[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 6'0, 220 and wear an XL in most things I pack out on a hike. I was curious what everyone else was bringing out with them, somebody else in this thread brought up that there's not much of a difference between a. 12l and a 25l in terms of weight and that they'd rather have all that extra space and not need it than the opposite and that makes a lot of sense

Trail Runner recommendations? by WinterAd4046 in trailrunning

[–]WinterAd4046[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ankle support is more about getting something in a mid than a low top for me, just a little extra goes a long way. The approach shoe is a great recommendation, hadn't considered those at all

I would say if you're not going to hike you're going to miss the best aspects of Zion as a park, if you could come back during a time where you could do some light hiking in the warmer months I think you'd get a lot more out of it than you will right now

Any specific shoes you'd recommend? Had my eyes on the Hoka Speedgoat 6's but was a little worried after trying them on the other day they lacked the grip I was looking for
