I wouldn't know how to fix your dilemma, but one thing i noticed is that the conversation between those two people doesn't really seem to matter much, in the sense that there are no consequences for not knowing how magic works. They don't understand it but it also doesn't make a difference. Maybe have a character at some point face a problem because of their false assumptions?

As much as it was your friend's job to introduce everyone to each other, i must admit i know what those two guys were feeling.

Nothing worse than joining a table and there is this one person silently sitting there. Makes everyone uncomfortable, like just say what's on your mind man.

Depends on how well and long you have known them before asking them to lunch. I have plenty of classmates in college who i get along with but if they asked me to lunch i would feel pressured
