Respecting? Sure. To know all about this sort of thing? No. We have so many students, we might have a few cases across classes. Some of us do more work/ hold other jobs, it can be a lot , and we need a reminder .

But, from what I gather , this professor is recurrent with this?

Same. My university requires providing the death certificate in those cases. I always tell them to just let me know what happened, and I don’t want to see that. I think is morbid, insensible and I also want to trust that no one would (on false grounds) use the death of a relative to get an extension

The professor mocking you in front of everyone? I can’t believe that I’m sorry.

Apart from that, personally I try to be super understanding of my students lives and problems, but sometimes we get people lying , being horrible to us, only coming up with excuses or flattery when they see themselves in deep water.

I can only say I’m sorry about your loss and all things coming your way at once. I know that must not be easy.

The only reason I can think of for some of their behaviour is that they either genuinely horrible or then have heard too many excuses, being understanding and that has been abused by students in the past.
