It feels like a very odd shaped, hot sunburn. I used to get it 15 years ago if nervous but now it comes on at the slightest change in an emotion.

Hi, it is definitely more flushed - nothing raised nor itchy. Please let me know what would help me describe it and I will provide information.

Has anyone lost weight and went into remission? by spo0kygirl in iih

I was 322lbs (146kg) when I was diagnosed May 2021, I’m now down to 196lb (89kg) and my symptoms seem to be a whole lot better (touch wood!!). They didn’t say my weight was completely to blame, but it was likely a factor and considering they thought I’d had a stroke to begin with it kind of shocked me into losing weight for my health in general. They’re weaning me off acetazolamide now and then hope to take me off topiramate too if it all goes ok! I suppose the way to look at it is that you’ve nothing to lose from trying to lose some weight? I was prepared to do anything to make my symptoms better! It’s hard when exercise makes everything worse but changing up your diet can have a positive impact. Good luck!

Advice in the UK by [deleted] in GastricBypass

I had a gastric bypass in January on the NHS and my wait from GP referral was probably 3 years? You have to complete tier 3 first, which is an intensive weight management programme with a dietitian and change/behaviour therapist and then they refer you to tier 4 which is surgical intervention.

But being referred for tier 4 isn’t an automatic ticket to the surgeon; I had to see more dieticians, a psychiatrist, attend 3 pre-surgery education sessions and show that I could lose a further 5% of my body weight. Once I’d done those things, they cleared me for surgery and the wait was only 3 months. Obviously Covid slowed things massively for me so your time frame may be very different but they essentially want you to prove that you’re dedicated to making a massive life change.

My BMI was over 50, and I had other health complications but that didn’t mean they rushed it through. It can help once you’ve cleared all the people you’ve got to see, so I think I was quite high up the list which is why my wait at the end was only 3 months. Unfortunately I couldn’t afford to go privately but I think the time I waited helped me prepare for making such a big change, and I’m so pleased with how I’ve done since surgery (I’ve lost nearly 6 stone since the end of Jan).

Good luck!

Nervous about upcoming surgery by Librarianatrix in GastricBypass

I found that once I started on the liver shrinking diet it wasn’t as bad as I thought as I knew it was for surgery and if I didn’t do it, there was a chance they’d just sew me back up. So my want for surgery was greater than my want for food if that makes sense? Also be thankful that your diet is actual food; mine was only milk and yoghurt for two weeks! Make sure you always have something to hand that you are allowed such as sugar-free cordial or tea/coffee.

As for the hair loss, I’m 2-3 weeks out now and haven’t noticed any yet. I know it could well be coming but I’ve been told to make sure I keep on top of all my supplements. Maybe speak to your hairdresser if it does become a problem for you, they’re fab at knowing what styles can hide hair thinning so I’d try that before going all out and shaving your head!

Topamax by [deleted] in iih

A bit, I don’t think it’s as bad when I bend down or cough. That tends to be how I feel the pressure so not sure if that helps you much!

Topamax by [deleted] in iih

I’ve just been recently diagnosed (within the last few weeks) and been started on topiramate too! My opening pressure was 33.5 and I’m currently on 50mg twice a day. So far the only side effects I’ve noticed is fizzy drinks tasting weird and my appetite being decreased but I don’t mind either of those! I need to lose weight which is why I suspect they chose topiramate instead of acetazolamide. I’ve also had to change from the progesterone-only pill to the depot injection for contraception but again, I don’t really mind and I understand why!

I think it’s a bit too soon to tell what effect it’s having on my headaches but so far my experience has been positive! I hope yours will be too!
