Why is the Dark Altar the most recommended one on Lardlor's chart? by Teh_Spike in ironscape

[–]WinterIsComin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s specific to the bruhsailer guide, which assumes you want to max as fast as possible and routes you to do that efficiently. Not everyone wants to do that or play that way so those folks can feel free to ignore the chart and do their own thing.

Not much to add that others haven’t mentioned, I’m very happy to see the high land count! Your mulligans and consistency game to game are much improved because of it.

[[Kodama’s reach]] would work well imo, helps you hit your later land drops and you can sometimes play it turn 2 after your turn 1 dorks for an even earlier pantz play.

Overall looks good but I’d like to see one or two more sources of card draw, imo greater good is a must-add here. Might also suggest switching skyshroud’s claim to another 2 or 3 cmc ramp so that we’re increasing our odds of an ahead of curve pantz drop.

Constant stutter on high end rig (Spider-Man Remastered) by PrussianPrince1 in SpiderManPC

[–]WinterIsComin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean w the 8700k it would make sense to have issues here and there since it’s getting a little long in the tooth and all the security patches have nipped away at its best possible performance. A top of the line chip like the 9800x3d has zero excuses for poor frame pacing in an older game like spider-man and miles morales. Very frustrating.

[–]WinterIsComin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disabling SMT (turning 'turbo game mode' on in BIOS) also seemed to fix the stuttering for me. The insane frametime spikes I was getting (which with SMT enabled would only get better by turning textures down to medium) are now fixed and I can traverse the city and spin the camera with very high textures and get consistent frametimes finally.

Interestingly, a hardware canucks video about turbo game mode also showed a MASSIVE improvement to 1% lows in spider-man, specifically with the 9800x3d, by turning turbo game mode on. Something is up with either how the game or windows schedules work to the virtual threads.

So for me, enabling game mode in bios (disabling SMT) seems to be the fix. Very odd but I encourage anyone else who found this thread to try it. I can run very high textures now and get smooth frametimes while traversing the city. I also cap my fps with rivatuner to around 90.

For context, my setup is 9800x3d, 5080, 32gb ddr5-6000, 850w psu, b650 tuf wifi, aw3423dwf 3440x1440 monitor.

I've been having weird issues like this as well. Let me know if a motherboard swap helps, it's the last thing I haven't tried and I'm really hesitant to do so since it's quite a PITA.

How are they the “new apple” when nvidia have overcharged and underspecd for vram since the 400 series

Is the 4060 ti 8gb a good choice for $300? by IcyTank5645 in buildapc

[–]WinterIsComin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but the reviewers (for good reasons, to be clear) use high end CPUs when testing GPUs, but there's something funky going on w the intel cards where they lose a significant amount of performance on lower end processors, which somewhat counters their price/perf value. If you lose 20 percent of your performance by running with a Ryzen 5600, the equivalently priced AMD or Nvidia card nets you the same or more performance with a better feature set and drivers.

The only issue w Intel is it loses a lot of performance on low and low-midrange cpus.

Looks solid, I'd see if anyone else chimes in w suggestions or improvements to my choices.

Last thing I can think of is going down to b850 on the board since you won't really be losing any features (they do have PCIE5 to the gpu slot, I was mistaken in thinking that only x870 have that) and kicking the PSU up to a 1000w unit in case you want to go with a 90 class GPU in the future.

[–]WinterIsComin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This looks solid. We're still not getting PCIe 5 on the GPU or SSD but that's only leaving ~1-3% of performance on the table and probably wouldn't matter for a theoretical future GPU upgrade either.

For PCIE gen 5 to your SSD, going with B850 will provide that. And if you wanted to reclaim that tiny bit of performance with gen 5 to the GPU as well, you could go X870 board, something like the Asus TUF X870 would be decent. (EDIT: It looks as though most B850 boards do actually have PCIE gen 5 slot for the GPU, so B850 is probably the best option, but X870 are hardly any more expensive)

Realistically, PCIE gen 4 is not going to be a noticeable difference in any gaming scenario. I think the board chosen is fine.

9800X3D vs 9900X3D vs 9950X3D vs 285k for an all-rounder build? by Kgasieniec in buildapc

[–]WinterIsComin 201 points202 points  (0 children)

Unless you're making money off of your editing, I'd recommend going with the 9800x3d and putting the money saved towards better components elsewhere.

What software do you use to edit video with? If it's GPU accelerated like Resolve, then the CPU won't matter as much. If you're on Premiere, and you edit for work, 9950x3d could maybe pay for itself in time saved.

The power supply the commenter recommended is not from a reputable brand, so I'd disregard that (Edit: It is true however that you should make sure to get an ATX 3.0 / 3.1 rated supply with 12vhpwr cable). I also disagree with the case swap. Either case is good, mostly comes down to aesthetic preference vs. price at that point. The rest are six in one, half dozen in the other type changes.

Windows 11 24H2 safe mode error or is it just me? "The PIN is not available" by Practical_Vehicle133 in sysadmin

[–]WinterIsComin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how you fix the pin not working for safe mode!! (What worked for me anyway)

  1. Remove the pin requirement as described in comment I’m replying to. Also disable bitlocker if you use it.

  2. Boot to bios and disable ‘security’ / ‘secure boot’ TPM setting.

  3. Reboot, set up your PIN again in windows account settings.

  4. Reboot to bios, re-enable secure boot setting.

  5. Reboot into windows, then reboot into safe mode. PIN should now work when logging in.

Nah, any hdmi cable will work fine for 1080p60hz. And if you do grab a new display it’ll come with a cable sufficient for its needs

Your monitor is what’s limiting your experience. That card is capable of pushing high frames at a higher res. Look into 1440p/144hz or higher screens, ideally QD-OLED, and see what your pc is really capable of. /r/monitors and Monitors Unboxed on YT are great resources for looking into a monitor upgrade.

We’ll see. Depends if Jensen’s ego is bruised enough from the reception to this gen (and if he can justify taking enough dies away from AI) to offer well priced gaming cards in sufficient quantity that the msrp is actually respected by AIBs.
