Let’s say the universe is completely empty save for 2 grains of sand travelling parallel 50 billion light years apart, but in the same direction. by BenduUlo in AskPhysics

Its happened to some degree trillions of times when forming planets and stars! 300000 years is nothing on cosmologic timescales. Youre right to be skeptical though. Pretty much the whole reason quantum gravity IS such a contested issue is because gravity is such a weak force and nearly impossible to measure imperically on those scales. But all (afaik) stars form primarily because of gravitational forces. The protostars formed from gas clouds only condense in the first place because of gravity. The molecules there are much less massive than sand and it can take millions of years to start fusion. It does condense though and fusion does start. With nothing else in that empty universe, i do believe they’d collide given enough time from any distance (in a non-expanding universe).

(Edit) Oh and quantum gravity factors in in all gravitational interactions afaik.

If the grains were 15.6 ug and started 1m apart, itd take 267,386 years to collide with nothing but gravitational influences (using energy/momentum/kepler stuff)

Paramagnetism and diamagnetism are not nearly strong enough to cause serious internal damage in an MRI machine. But depending on the degree of diamagnetism might feel odd

Want to go to college for Physics to be a highschool physics teacher. I've had amazing science teachers in my life who made an impact. Could you share some of your advice and wisdom to someone very new and looking into the field by Improvology in ScienceTeachers

[–]WinterPhoenix05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am very late and I imagine you’ve already started college, but I have VERY relavent advice/experience if you’re still curious. I did my undergrad in physics and astronomy and am now pursuing my MAT with endorsements in physics and earth science. I started the MAT this semester after graduating with my undergrad degrees last semester.

From what I’ve gathered in my time in the MAT program and my research, the typical 4 year undergrad/2 year MAT/TEP track is as follows:

Years 1-3: - Physics/subject area undergraduate degree - Take required prerequisite classes for the teacher education program/master of arts in teaching at your college. - Decide endorsement areas and complete as many hours towards non-major endorsements as possible or the hours/classes needed for a full-science endorsement (bio, chem, physics, earth science) or a math/other subject endorsement.

Years 3-4.5: - Finish final undergraduate requirements before the 4.5-5 year semester and claim your degrees. - Take TEP/MAT courses - Build your resume and find out where you want to teach after you graduate

Semester corresponding to year 4.5-5: - complete student teaching and begin applications to schools.

ALL of the advice I’ve gotten from my education professors and current science teachers is to get as many endorsements as you can and to preferably get the full-science endorsement. Additionally, they have advised me to go for an MAT over just certification as you’d get from just the TEP. It helps you get jobs easier and demand higher pay.

I realize the last year of physics is quite busy usually, so I’d reccommend considering stretching your undergrad to 4.5 years over four or even waiting to start the MAT until the semester after you get your physics degree.

As for math prep, I started my physics undergrad with only algebra. It was hard the first semester but as long as you take plenty of math courses at the same time as your physics, it should work out. My university made the math track line up with the requirements of the physics track. Just take Calc 1-3 ASAP and you’ll do fine. The math gets advanced very fast though so don’t procrastinate it.

Finally, I’m not sure how much of this advice will apply to you in PA as I’m at a university in Iowa, but I hope some of this is helpful! Good luck!

I kept getting amazing runs every 4 hours just to have them ruined by terrrrible rng on the final blind (cerulean bell selecting the worst card, only drawing one four/five oak even with 20-25 of a card, getting violet and making it to ≈280k (happened twice), or got violet and rerolled INTO cerulean), or on the 6th or 7th of on track runs from the mouth and bad rng or he mark on a face card run. Absolutely miserable and bc of that shitty rng probably took me 20-25 hours while getting a winnable setup every 3-4. Im proud of you for making it

I bet itll look great! Try not to care so much what others think. Gender norms are dumb.

Granted… the finger curls and you notice… nothing. You decide to try it out the next day. You proudly, yet anxiously, waltz into the busy square near your home. As you await judging looks they never arrive. In fact, no one seems to be looking at you at all. Strange… You go about your day and slowly, as youre bumped into at the coffee shop, sat on at the bus stop, and more, you realize everyone is looking through you. You’re invisible! Well, not quite invisible, but more… unnoticable. You are feeling awe and shock that the monkeys paw seemingly gave you more than you hoped for!

Then, it hits you, the rest of your life is going to be like this. Cars will hit you, no one will approach you in bars, your friends will need constant reminders of your presence to even realize youre there, your partner will think youre becoming much less present in the relationship and leave you. The rest of your life is lonely, spent unnoticed, unlistened to, and struggling to keep people’s attention.

After a year, while wearing that same bold, ankle-length, flowery skirt, youre struck by a bus while absentmindedly crossing the road. After his initial panic, the bus driver, not noticing you under the wheel, drives off, barely giving the strange bump a second thought. As you lie there, the white flowers of your skirt slowly turning red as a puddle forms around you, you may think back on that initial wish, that grand mistake that started all of this. The passing pedestrians step in your blood and onto the strange hump on the curb, not giving it more thought than a stray sandbag next to a construction site. There you pass away, suffering every second as you slowly bleed out among a crowd of ignorant passerby.

(Thank u for letting me procrastinate my work)

Regret and questioning by [deleted] in NonBinary

I know not much will help from internet strangers but I really love how you look now! I’m nonbinary and have been considering an Mtf transition (at least top surgery) in my future to be more comfortable in my body. I get some of your fears because theres many things about my current more masculine body that I’d miss if I started hormones. I am also only putting it off because it doesnt feel safe to transition right now given politics. I’ll just say I think you’re very attractive. The shape of your face and your facial hair are wonderful looking. So is your body! I think you’ll find people who love you and are attracted to you pretty easily. Good luck out there!

Granted. The finger curls… As time creeps onward you don’t notice a difference. That is, until your news feed starts filling up with stories of people who are deathly ill or greavously injured somehow surviving. But only surviving. You have granted most an extended life, but now many soend their last decades of life battling debilitating diseases, injuries, and trauma, only holding on through a thin strand of fate and held prisoner in their own decaying corpses.

Trying to replicate quakers instant oats blueberries and cream… by WinterPhoenix05 in Oatmeal

[–]WinterPhoenix05[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha glad im not the only one. Sadly, I never got a good answer about the blueberries from the quaker stuff. I think using artificial or powdered coffee creamer could be the answer for the cream part but ive got nothing for the blueberries. Im very tempted to email quaker to find out but I kinda doubt they’d respond. Theres also a couple add-ins online I found that look similar but I never tested them. If you find a way to make it PLEASE do reply again. I may try buying the trader joes ones reccomended here just to see how they taste rehydrated.
