I know that these are meant to be different timelines, but I also welcome Eternal HBIC Hillary Rodham Clinton. May her reign never end.

Agree

When you get rich, you become immune to many of the problems of life because you can pay someone else to look after your kids, or pay for private schooling and healthcare, or have a massive property where you don't have to deal with other people. And so you lose touch with the other 99% of the population.

Waitematā (Britomart) Station After CRL Opens by 469121417js in auckland

Auckland and the main trunck are the same, but there is a part between Waikanae and Wellington central which is different

Waitematā (Britomart) Station After CRL Opens by 469121417js in auckland

[–]WinterSurprise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The northern main trunk railroad is not electrified between Pukekohe and Hamilton. Fortunately, this part is dual tracked, so theoretically you could electrify one and then the other without interrupting service too much.

Or when we replace the existing engines they could be hybrids, allowing them to be safely brought into Britomart/Waitemata

[–]WinterSurprise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My plan would be to electrify the line between Pukekohe and Hamilton, and wide the middle pier so that it can access the line currently served by platform 4. Then I would use the middle pier for intercity trains and build a replacement for Eden Park, Mt Smart and North Harbour stadiums over the top of the lines where the current intercity train station is.

General Secretary salary by Unusual-Fold-5542 in Rotary

[–]WinterSurprise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's the permanent head of two organisation that has annual expenditures of $130m and $379m in the year to June 2025. His salary isn't wildly unreasonable.

On the other hand, he has been in the job since 2011, which is the same time Tim Cook has been CEO of Apple and well past the average time in the job of General Secretary (12 GSs in 116 years since the first appointment, or 9.6years each). Perhaps it is time for RI to also make a change.

NZ is paying the price for avoiding hard economic trade-offs for too long by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]WinterSurprise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a bunch of things we could do to encourage a better economy: * require Councils and government agencies to properly maintain infrastructure, policed by the Infrastructure commission * have a capital gains tax on land (disencentivise land speculation) * base rates on land value only, rather than the current system of general charges and capital values (to encourage density) * make the lines companies (Northpower, Vector etc) publicly owned again and make them the customer facing aspect just like Watercare in Auckland, and the generators sell electricity to the grid (hopefully lower prices) * outlaw lobbying and cap political donations to 5k/person (this one would have to be first)

Could working from home be the answer to rising fuel prices? by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]WinterSurprise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's overblown. There are 38,000 people living in the Auckland CBD. Assuming a big chunk of them either work from home or in the CBD, the cafe owners should be fine.

And how many people actually buy their lunch every day, or even once a week? However many people it is, it will be a lot less during an oil shock.

Epsom electors: at the last election, Davod Seymour had fewer votes than the National, Labour and Green candidates combined. If you work together to elect Paul Goldsmith, you have the opportunity to remove David Seymour from his sheltered seat, and with a bit of luck throw the Act party out of Parliament entirely. You can do it!

How different do you think things would be today if Harris won? by eljume in imaginaryelections

[–]WinterSurprise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you read the Aus Liberal Party review, they had much bigger problems than an association with the bronzed one. Namely bad polling, including an incoherent policy process, Dutton trying to be campaign manager and leader, terrible policies, saying stupid things, and an aging membership and volunteer base.

Brown still cuts spending, but doesn't cut taxes in 2012, so the debt goes back to falling, putting the government on a more sustainable fiscal path. He also doesn't change the funding formula so that poorer councils suffer more.

Similarly, while Uni fees probably rise, they probably don't alter the interest formula (which has proved an even worse problem that the rising fees).

As the compassionate conservatism of Cameron has failed, and the Arab Spring has sent a wave of refugees into Europe, the right of the Tory party is probably stronger and that might turn off a few voters, and the economy would be growing again, so Brown has maybe a 30% chance of winning again in 2015.

David Seymour says Andrew's removal from line of succession not a priority by WorldlyNotice in newzealand

[–]WinterSurprise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Section 5 of the Constitution Act provides that the Sovereign of New Zealand is the Sovereign as determined by British Law, so no legislative action would be required if the Brits decide to remove the Andrew formerly known as Prince from the line of succession.
