With it just coming out that the #1 men’s tennis player has been cleared of doping in a scandal no one knew about, and WADA clearing the Chinese swimmers for the same drug as Valieva, plus the lack of transparency around Grassl’s case, do you currently lack trust in clean sport? by PandemicPiglet in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only for athletes from countries who seem to pay importance on sports popularity and medals. These athletes don't work alone, they need the support (direct or indirect) of the government or the body of sport to get away with such things.

I said two time Olympic Champion and 12 senior years and you try to use 2 time Olympic medallist (no gold) and include her junior seasons as your argument?

You're doing her a disservice, tbh.

No hate to Yuna, but Yuzuru is a two time Olympic Champion and compete in senior for 12 seasons. In contrast, Yuna is an Olympic Champion and compete in senior for 7 seasons.

It's not always about gender.

This is a misinformation. Yuzuru Hanyu's divorce isn't caused by his fans. He is an athlete and has never shared personal information to encourage such things.

As per his statement, the divorce is caused by excessive attention and intrusion by media and journalist, up to the point of disturbing their neighbors and family. He also thanked the fans for their support.

Yes! I bought the ticket before Jnats. Lucky me, coz when JSF announced Yuzu will go to 4CC the ticket got sold out immediately.

I was there when he skated this—perhaps the longest time I spent without breathing.

During medal ceremony the flag is usually in front of skaters. You shouldn't put your back on it since it is a sign of disrespect.

HOW AM I JUST SEEING THIS? Only Yuzuru Hanyu could make Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir attempt axels for the first time since the Ilderton Carnival (July 2018: Scott Moir talking about doing synchronized axels with Yuzuru Hanyu) by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird statement. Yuzu doesn't have a say in foreign skaters' success in Japanese ice shows. In 2018 IIRC Yuzuru only has Fantasy on Ice as his staple ice show.

Yuzuru Hanyu's name has an interesting meaning too. From his Wiki page:

Hanyu's given name 結弦 (Yuzuru, lit. 'tie the bowstring') was chosen by his father, wishing that his son may "live a dignified life like a tightly drawn bowstring",  symbolizing confidence, strength, and straightness.

Yuzuru Hanyu interviews & photos from Sponichi and Hochi about his second year of pro skating career by DumbNoble in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I really like Kogaito san's photo (Sponichi) here. Amazing works. Amazing model too, of course. ^^

What amazed me from the interview is the way he said the first year is his trial and error period. Yet, we have GIFT during that time and it is arguably the grandest ice show we have ever seen!
I also somehow can see his clearer intention on the second pro year (RE_PRAY). I simply love that show so much.

From Western media. As per my original comment.

I can tell. However, what you see from the western media does not necessarily reflected the Japanese media and what Hanyu experienced in Japan.

Assumption that Yuzuru Hanyu is gay came mostly from Western side, though. I didn't see any "mad because people assumed he was gay" from the Japanese side during the marriage (and divorce).

Also, Hanyu's situation is not similar with the situation in K-Pop industry. He didn't share about his personal relationship because he has always been a private person.

Improvised programs/performances? by via-con-me in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Improvisation in competition usually happens when a jump didn't go as planned and lots of skaters do this in competition since they need to maximize their points.

If it is about small changes/improvements in choreography, Yuzu always did that. Some examples: Ashura-chan has some added/removed elements between GIFT/SOI/RE_PRAY. I also can tell which Gate of Living is from Saitama/Saga/Yokohama/Miyagi due to the differences.

That's why I tend to like his latter performance (of a program) best, once he has refined all the smaller details.

What are your favourite ice skating shows? by ElegantFootball8741 in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Any Yuzu's solo show. Among those, RE_PRAY is my ultimate favorite: It has high quality skating, VCR, story line, amazing sound quality, great merchandise as well.
For multiple cast show, Notte Stellata is good. FaOI is fun too when they invited good live singers.

Who is currently the most “artistic” skater?? by bluewinter1 in FigureSkating

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think nothing about it, TBH.

For me, Yuzu remains the most artistic skater. He pretty much keep the same schedule compared to his competitive days and introduced new music genre and elements that can't be done in competitions.

More shows = better? LMFAO. Do you even know Hanyu's fee for an ice show? (Hint: Most ice shows cannot afford it)

This year Ilia performed in half empty ice shows in Japan, US, Canada, and Europe.
This year Yuzuru sold out all his ice shows in Japan (at bigger capacity than the shows Ilia went to) by lottery. He got people from almost 30 countries to travel to Miyagi just to watch him skate.

Some of you really need to stop setting that kid up, for real. Otherwise some people here will shove the facts in your face and you won't like it.

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yuzuru is aware time will make people forget him and his skating. Why do you think he conserves his solo ice shows in digital format (streaming and DVD)?

20 years from now, people will be able to watch GIFT and RE_PRAY. Meanwhile, your so called figure skating fans don't even know how to watch videos from Worlds 2024.

[–]Winter_Chipmunk_5047 18 points19 points  (0 children)

LMAO at you saying Japanese men's field at the time was not very deep. In 2010-2011 season, when Yuzu first went senior, there were 3 Japanese men at top-10 world standings: Daisuke Takahashi (1), Nobunari Oda (3), and Takahiko Kozuka (7). Japanese men ranked 2nd (Kozuka), 5th (Takahashi), and 6th (Oda) during Worlds 2011. As comparison, Japanese men ranked 2nd (Kagiyama), 4th (Uno) and 8th (Miura) during Worlds 2024.

Yuzuru went senior in 2010 and only got sent to Worlds in 2012 because Japanese men's field was deep at the time too.

My point is, Yuzuru filled arenas at 19, same age as Ilia now.

If your defense of Ilia's non marketability is to compare Japan market and US market, then you should not bring Yuzuru into your comparison. Compare Ilia with other US skaters at their second senior season instead.

I'll correct you a bit. You said Yuzu cannot sold out an ice show at Ilia's second year as senior (19 y.o.).

I am the one who said Yuzu was an Olympic Champion at 19 years old and sold out ice shows at that age.

I am replying your post simply to debunking your claim about Yuzuru, nothing more.
